Will Deer Eat Lemon Trees – Now that the weather is warming up, you’re thinking of moving the dwarf lemon tree you got for Christmas into the yard. Or maybe you’ve moved to a warmer climate and are thinking you’d like to add a ponderosa lemon tree to your nursery. But wait—you just remembered that you have a healthy deer population.
Well, there is good news and bad news. The good news is that deer are not particularly fond of aromatic plants, and the leaves and blossoms of citrus trees are quite aromatic. So deer are more likely to ignore your lemon trees and lindens when other, more palatable foods are available. The bad news is that there are few plants that deer won’t at least try, and if they’re hungry enough, they’ll eat anything. The even worse news is that a buck doesn’t need to gnaw on a seedling to damage it – it just needs to use it as a post to scratch its horns on!

Don’t worry…a high native deer population doesn’t mean you can’t have citrus groves. Here are some tips on how to deal with lemon tree diseases and pests so that you can keep at least some of the fruit for yourself.

We have several citrus trees in our yard, including lemons, oranges, tangerines, and limes, and while they are doing well, we are looking for ways to increase their pollination and therefore fruit yield. This led us to look at companion planting. So what are good citrus tree companions?
The best companion plants for citrus trees are wildflowers, nasturtiums, lavender, rosemary and garlic. Ideally, companion plants attract pollinators, build soil, repel pests and are visually appealing. Depending on shade tolerance, some plants can be planted under the tree itself.
So while these plants make great companions for citrus trees, what do they do to help and what other plants can we use? Let’s take a closer look.

Companion planting is the selection of specific plants together to achieve benefits such as increased pollination or pest repulsion. Sometimes these benefits are one-sided, and sometimes they are mutual.

Wildflowers are one of the best companion plants for citrus trees, primarily because they attract a variety of beneficial insects such as pollinators. These pollinators include bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.
The variety of wildflower colors is visually appealing to pollinators and provides a good mix of nectar that they can use for energy.
Increased wildflower pollination is important because although most citrus trees are self-pollinating, they can still benefit from cross-pollination. In summary, they have less dropped fruit and sometimes even larger fruit.

How To Thin Fruit Trees
This aromatic plant is a good companion to almost anything, including citrus trees. They are hardy perennials and have a lot of resin, so their leaves and flowers are usually too tough and greasy to be of interest to pests like deer, rabbits or squirrels.
Their fragrant purple flowers also attract beneficial insects such as bees, which are among the best pollinators.
Lavender is known to repel ticks and fleas due to its strong oils and can even repel mice and rats. Both of these plants like hot, dry conditions, making them good choices for gardens that experience intense summer heat.
Rosemary usually blooms early, around the same time as citrus trees. This is a great pollination advantage for citrus flowers.

Plants like rosemary and lavender also have relatively short roots, which is good because the deeper roots can compete with the shallow roots of citrus trees.
Like lavender, rosemary also likes warm, dry conditions. This makes them perfect for growing with citrus trees in places like California. On the other hand, growing rosemary can be a bit more challenging in an environment like Florida due to the frequent rains.
Comfrey is currently one of the most popular companion flowers because not only can it be used to attract pollinators, but it also grows incredibly fast and tall, eventually drooping and making excellent mulch for other plants.
Comfrey also fixes nitrogen in the soil. For this reason, blackberries are an excellent plant to grow and improve poor soil.

For best results, plant bran next to fruit trees such as citrus, as well as vegetables such as asparagus. However, common pickles grow well with almost any plant.
Grows and spreads aggressively. For this reason, many gardeners prefer to grow Russian bran, as its seeds are sterile.

Nasturtiums are edible, beautiful and fast growing. They are good companions for citrus trees as they attract pollinators and attract aphids away from the tree.

I once had aphids on my Kaffir limes and they were hard to deal with (I finally found that spraying them with a light stream of water knocked them off and they haven’t come back since). At that time it would have been good to know that nasturtium would have helped too!
Nasturtium flowers come in a variety of colors, and their sand dollar-shaped leaves are eye-catching. They also have no problem growing in poor soil – as long as it drains well.
Because they quickly gain along the ground, they are an excellent ground cover. As a result, it protects the soil with less evaporation and provides habitat for beneficial garden life.
You can transplant nasturtiums with any of the plants on this list to add color to your citrus tree. However, avoid planting nasturtiums with cauliflower and squash, as they can compete.

The Allium family, which includes chives, garlic and onions, has natural antifungal properties. For example, when chives are planted with apple trees, they help prevent a fungal disease called scab ( source ). Since citrus trees are also vulnerable to fungal infections, planting chives nearby should also prevent fungal infections.
Allies are also good at repelling certain pests such as aphids, mites, grubs, as well as rabbits and deer. They are so effective that some deterrents are even made from them ( source ).
Additionally, aluminum roots are relatively shallow and grow to a depth of 12 to 18 inches. This makes them good companion plants because they will not interfere with or compete with the shallow roots of the citrus tree.

Chives also bloom in spring and summer with beautiful purple flowers that attract pollinators. They are easy to maintain and often used in the kitchen!

Many legumes, such as clover, peas, and beans (along with some grasses), are also called cover crops because they are good plants for depleted soils.
Cover crops are used to improve soil health by slowing erosion, retaining water, preventing weeds, and controlling pests and diseases. They have even been shown to increase crop yields.

During 2012 during the drought, corn and soybean growers reported yield increases of 9.6-11.6% with cover crops, probably in part because cover crops can add 50-150 pounds of nitrogen per acre. acres.
