For more than a decade, this city has been an escape with world-class shopping, walking, dining, and some of the best contemporary art on the East Coast. However, in the past few years, Main Street Beacon has exploded with new boutiques, restaurants, bars and cafes along its many blocks.

And while there are plenty of things to do in town, one of Beacon’s best attractions is its landscape. The High Street lies at the foot of the mountain. Lighthouse, the highest peak in the Hudson Valley and a wonderful day hike, with sweeping views of the city and the Hudson River below. It takes six stops and about an hour and a half on MetroNorth to get to this charming, city-like city. Although Beacon is very accessible – even in pedestrian areas – a taxi or local shuttle will take you anywhere.
For art lovers, Dia:Beacon is a no-brainer. The Museum of Modern Art, which includes works by Donald Judd, Richard Seri, Joseph Beuys, Dan Flavin, Louise Bourgeois and many others, is a treasure of the city, especially for first-time visitors. One of the things that makes Dia:Beacon so unique is that each gallery is designed specifically for the artists’ work – no small feat given the sheer scale of Judd and Serra’s sculptures. The museum, once a printing house, is lit almost entirely by skylights, giving dramatic light to the sculptures and paintings inside. For a cheaper entry, the MTA has an admission package ($40) that includes round-trip tickets to the Beacon and museum admission.
In addition to Dia:Beacon, Beacon has many art galleries, including BAU, a fine art gallery and project space featuring young and mid-life artists, and Mother Gallery, a sister gallery to the Chelsea space, which always offers new and inventive exhibitions to see.

Beacon’s other main attraction is its hiking, with many escapees escaping the city to go on one of the day hikes; we recommend one or two challenging but totally worthwhile trips up the mountain. The first is to its summit, where tourists can explore the ruins of the Beaconcrest Hotel, including the foundations of its old casino, as well as the gear that powered traffic on the mountain. Lighthouse. The hike is steep on the way up, but well worth the two-hour round trip, with incredible views of Beacon below, Newburgh across the Hudson River, and the Catskills in the distance.
Another amazing trip is to Beacon Reservoir. (Click here to see a preview of this walk.) This trail follows Dry Brook Creek with several beautiful waterfalls before opening up to a much larger tiered waterfall that is beautiful year-round, even old when partially frozen. Eventually the path leads to an access road where a right turn uphill leads to the huge Beacon Reservoir. If you’re looking for an even bigger challenge, head from Dry Brook to the Fishkill Ridge Trail, which will give your lungs a good workout and fewer crowds.
Want to stretch your legs, but with less time? Take a look at Madame Brett Park, a picturesque 1.6-metre-long footpath that starts in a derelict hat factory from the early 19th century. It runs along the Fishkill Creek just before it empties into the Hudson River.
After hiking Beacon’s trails, you’ll want to stroll down its long High Street, where, as mentioned, Beacon’s shopping scene has grown dramatically. Our favorite store is Berte, an expertly curated home decor and lifestyle store featuring local and international artisans. Pop in for swoon-worthy tableware or the most gorgeous paper goods. For plant parents and botanical kids alike, Flora Good Times is the best plant and flower shop in town. Kaight is a Beacon outlet selling eco-friendly clothing from independent brands – a haven for the conscious consumer. If you’re looking for decor, check out fine jewelry store King + Curated; or if you’re looking for some pampering, Beacon Mercantile is a must. Part apothecary, part perfumery, everything at Beacon Mercantile is handcrafted in small batches with natural ingredients. The Last Outpost is great for menswear, leather and camping goods, while Hyperbole is a great place to find art that won’t break the bank, and they have gorgeous candles, cute clothes and thoughtful gifts. And Afton Road is the ceramic shop of your dreams, where the owner actually throws pots into the main shopping area of the shop.

Beacon is a great day trip, but if you’re willing to pay a little money and stay the night, it’s worth it. Enter The Roundhouse, a beautiful group of restored industrial buildings overlooking Fishkill Creek, at the base of Beacon Falls and the east end of Main Street. The hotel is named after the circular building that houses the lobby, restaurant, bar/lounge and the main hotel; there is an additional building nearby called the Mill.
Round House’s aesthetic is industrial yet elegant, with vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and concrete – similar to the feel of Dia:Beacon. We stayed in a penthouse, the size of a large one bedroom apartment in New York. The bathroom was particularly impressive, with a large shower (three! shower! head!), beautiful slate floors and skylights. The big draw, however, was the circular hot tub in the middle of the bedroom, which overlooks Beacon Falls and was the perfect indulgence in the loft-like room.
Despite its busy bar and restaurant, the Roundhouse is surprisingly quiet and zen – almost gallery-like – with the ever-present white noise of the waterfall outside. It’s a unique experience you won’t find anywhere else.
Dream Day: Explore An Artists’ Enclave In Beacon, N.y
There are a couple of great options for breakfast. The cardamom buns at Hakan – a chocolatier and cafe from the same owner as FIKA in New York – are a must and pair well with a hot latte. Kitchen & Coffee is a gluten-free vegetarian restaurant and bakery with excellent breakfast and lunch options as well as delicious baked goods; try the Cheddar Onion Corn Muffins. Matcha Thomas is the hottest matcha spot in town, and Peaceful Provisions has our favorite donut on Main Street (bonus: it’s vegan + gluten-free, so it’s mostly healthy, right?!). If you’re in town on Saturday, fill up on empanadas from Nana’s Home Kitchen at the Beacon Farmers Market before heading east along Main.
Whenever we are in Beacon, we try to have Homespun Foods for lunch or dinner with us. Our favorite hearty winter meal is the Nut and Cheese Loaf (aka “vegetarian meatloaf”) with mac and cheese. In addition to large meals, they also offer healthy sandwiches, soups and salads; a selection of good bottled beers and wines; plus a great little backyard to enjoy your spread. (Aficionados will be happy to know that the second location is now at Dia:Beacon.) Meanwhile, The Beacon Daily has delicious, hearty sandwiches that often call for a nap. For lighter fare, there’s Vegetalien , a plant-based cafe and juice bar. Finally, One More Bite serves Korean Fusion cuisine
