“We’re real estate guys and I don’t consider myself a player,” Birnbaum said. “We have surrounded ourselves and learned a lot from what we consider to be the best and brightest in the industry. We are humbled and look forward to your best-in-class team and project.”
Birnbaum said he was excited that the Rio reopened on Dec. 22 after being closed since March.
“We just have to have numbers on a spreadsheet,” he said. “When we were active, we didn’t see it and we didn’t see those numbers live. Unfortunately, we didn’t do that because of the COVID. Fortunately, Rio partially reopened on December 22nd, so we start in real time under the hood to come, which is good.
After ownership of Dreamscape, Beerbaum said he expects Plano, Texas-based Aimbridge Hospitality “to take an active role in hotel management.” At that time, Birnbaum and Ellis will have to apply to find a better fit. “It puts together an aesthetic that feels updated and relevant, and then it’s an experience, especially with relevant food brands that we think our customer is,” he said. “We know who the customer is, or at least we think we know, and we’re going to make a product that targets that customer.”

He also expects a strong recovery for Rio and Las Vegas after the effects of COVID-19 fade.
“Our view is that there should be a vaccine, and as a result there will be more pent-up demand,” Birnbaum said. “Our view — and we could be wrong — is that Vegas is poised to really take advantage of this.”
