Nish has an epiphany when he and Lucian escape arrest at Danioni’s behest. Constance catches Lucian’s eye on a boat trip but sees more than she bargained for in return. Bella stands up to Danioni, who hands over a letter of compromise to her husband.
The police are looking for the missing inheritance, and suspicion falls on a missing guest and husband, Billy, who also hid political brochures at Nish’s request. The quest ends with a confrontation between Cecil and Jack.
The mystery of the missing heir is solved when Cecil makes a startling discovery about Danioni. Lucian admits his true feelings until a secret from Constance’s past is revealed, forcing him to decide on his future engagement to Rose.

Hotel Portofino’ Recap: Episode 1
Carol the series was written in the fall of 2020. The book is a novelization of the series, although it was published before the launch of the series.
As much as I wanted to love Hotel Portofino I have to say it was just an average read. I don’t like it or dislike it. Despite multiple storylines ranging from young love to blackmail, it just didn’t seem to grab and hold my attention. It’s the mid 1920s. The Great War is over for 8 years and life in Britain is returning to normality. For the English with money, “strangers” started again. For Bella Ainsworth, owner of the Hotel Portofino, this means that her new hotel could become “the” as much as I wanted to love Hotel Portofino I have to tell myself that it is just an average reading. I don’t like it or dislike it. Despite multiple storylines ranging from young love to blackmail, it just didn’t seem to grab and hold my attention. It’s the mid 1920s. The Great War is over for 8 years and life in Britain is returning to normality. For the English with money, “strangers” started again. For Bella Ainsworth, owner of the Hotel Portofino, that means her new hotel could become “the” destination for visitors, visitors with money, that is, if she can keep it open. The hotel is Bella’s baby every stick of furniture and color of paint she chose. To help with the hotel Bella’s family and trusted servants have come. Cecil whose husband is not doing well is an aristocrat who, despite being penniless, spends his time gambling and accumulating debt. Her children also came. Lucien is Bella’s son who was seriously injured during the war and still bears the physical and emotional scars of his wounds. Then there is war widow Alice and her young daughter Lottie. Add a host of servants and hotel guests, including but not limited to, aristocratic women on holiday, an Italian count and his son, and a black American jazz singer and her tycoon boyfriend and you have a very eclectic mix of personalities. Although she has a wide cast of characters, the author has done a commendable job defining and giving depth to each one. This is true even for the large number of secondary characters. Each character comes with their own personality quirks, secrets and history. Hence my problem with the novel. There is no one main plot that is explored in depth but there are a large number of story arcs that come and go quickly. Although each story was resolved, I felt that there was just too little time spent on any of them to really understand and connect with the characters involved. For example, when I read the book for this book, it seemed that one of the focuses of the novel would be the rise of Mussolini and the presence of a corrupt public official who used the dreaded blacks to enforce his will. The officer blackmails Bella. I thought I would see life in Italy at the beginning of Mussolini’s reign. What changes happened when he took over. Are many new restrictions placed on the population? None of this is even mentioned in the book. Instead I felt the official was painful at best, a caricature at worst, and the black shirts were simply street thugs who beat up people who disagreed with them. I also did not feel that it was really a threat. Feeling nothing was a disadvantage for me.. A book needs to evoke some emotion for the reader to feel connected to its characters or care about what happens in the story. I chose the audio book of the novel.. I often felt that is what kept me going back to the book. The narrator did a great job with her voice to portray each character, and her expertise with various accents (English, Italian and American) is evident. Although I felt the prose lacked tension, he worked hard to add it by vocally modulating his tone and inflection. If you read your book, this is the version I recommend. In general, the book is interesting enough to finish without
