Scott Mawhinney, general manager of the New Harrison Hot Springs Resort, says the resort is taking several steps to address a common problem in public swimming pools — finding fully qualified, certified lifeguards.
When Does Hotel Pools Open
The public swimming pool has been closed since the early days of the epidemic, and during the summer its closure caused concern among residents and tourists alike. In mid-May, Tourism Harrison announced that the public swimming pool would be open starting May 21 on weekends and possibly extended hours on weekdays. On June 17, it was announced that the pool would remain closed due to difficulty finding certified lifeguards.

Residents met Congressman Brad Vis of Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon in Harrison. In an effort to prevent current and future shortages, the restaurant is partnering with a Toronto-based agency to recruit housekeeping and other hotel staff from abroad. The resort has several houses in the village to provide accommodation for medical staff and other workers when they need local housing.

Mawhinney said he will open the resort’s pools to the public on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., accommodating 25 pool residents.
“The reason I cut it to Tuesday and Wednesday is because the hotel is full,” Mawhinney said. “This afternoon, you can’t swim in any pool, it’s too crowded,” he said.
Although the pools and hotels are now full, the past two years have been particularly bad for the tourism industry. Mawhinney said that COVID-19 and the travel shortages that followed have hit the hospitality industry hard.
