What Time Do Pools Close – When temperatures start to cool after summer, it’s time to close your pool for the winter and season. Whether you need to winterize an above-ground pool or an in-ground pool, we’ll show you what you need to know.
While pool winterization is not required in all areas of the country, if you live in an area where winter temperatures are at or below freezing, regular pool winterization is an essential part of pool maintenance. Winter offers these benefits:
What Time Do Pools Close
The following steps show you how to winterize an above ground pool and an inground pool. Most of the steps are the same, but in-ground pool winterization requires some procedures that you don’t need for an above-ground pool, and you’ll need to follow other steps a little differently. We’ll explain the differences so you know how to winterize a pool—no matter what type of pool you have.

Learning how to winterize a pool starts with knowing the right time. Use the temperature as your guide. Plan to close the pool for the winter when the temperature is regularly 65 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. You may not be using the pool at the moment, but if you close it while the temperature is still warm, you will allow algae to grow in the closed pool and create more work for you in the spring. Waiting for cooler temperatures will help prevent algae growth. Winterizing too early can reduce the effectiveness of the chemicals between when you close the pool and open it in the spring.
You can wait a little longer than the 65-degree point, but to avoid damage to the pool or filter system, make sure you finish before the temperature drops to 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Continue to filter, test, and balance the water until you close the pool, even if you’re not using it. This constant maintenance makes winter work easier.
Before you close the pool, give it a thorough cleaning. It is easy to balance the water with clear water and surface in winter.
Remove debris from the surface of the water with a handheld pool skimmer. Then wash the pool walls with a pool brush and clean the pool skimmer basket.

You need to vacuum all surfaces, especially areas that receive little water circulation. These are prime places for algae to grow. To use a hand vacuum, start by making sure the filter is on. Insert the top of the vacuum and the stem (with the hose attached) into the basin to fill with water. Place the open end of the hose over one of the return jets to remove all air from the hose. When the bubbling stops, have someone hold the filter, but you must hold the end of the hose under the water. Insert the adapter into the skimmer outlet. Connect the hose to the adapter. Tip Check out our buying guide to find the right vacuum for your pool.
Turn on the pump. Set the filter to trash and then turn the filter system on again. It bypasses the filter and sends the dirty water directly to your disposal or garbage disposal. Because when you drain the water tank, it’s a good idea to hose down the pool at the same time. Slowly run the vacuum to the bottom of the pool. When you’re done, turn off the pump, disconnect the hose, and return the system to the filter. CAUTION Always turn off the pump when changing filter settings.
Clean and properly balanced water for the winter can make a nice opening in the spring.
Precautions Follow all pool chemical instructions for use and safety, including any instructions for the use of safety equipment such as eye protection and chemical protection gloves.
Natural Swimming Pools
A few days after pool shock, check the water balance with a test kit. Dip the test strip in water and compare it to the chart. You want the water salinity to be between 80 and 150 parts per million (ppm). If it is outside that range, adjust it before you adjust the pH. The pH should be between 7.2 and 7.6. Use pH raiser or lowerer accordingly. Check for calcium hardness. For above-ground pools with fiberglass or vinyl liners, keep hardness between 175 and 225 ppm. Concrete or in-ground pools require higher levels of 200 to 275 ppm. Good to know Some kits work with mobile apps to store your information and make recommendations based on your test readings. Always operate the pump when adding chemicals.
Check the cleaner level. Detergents contain chlorine (most common), salt or bromine. The free chlorine level should be about 4 ppm. Add algae to prevent algae growth.
If you have a heater, turn it off. This is usually a matter of power or gas outages. Disassemble the filter and install a multi-port valve on the backwash.
Attach a backwash bag to the waste port if necessary. Make sure you get the right size tube. Move the container to a safe disposal site. In some systems the waste is connected directly to the drain. You don’t need a backwash for this type of system.

Open the filter and run for three to five minutes or until the water in the eye glass runs clear. The eye glass should be next to the waste port.
Shut off the system and flush the valve. Run the system for about 30 seconds. The rinse setting allows the water to pass through the filter and reset the filter element. After 30 seconds, turn off the system.
Open the pressure relief valve with a pressure gauge. At this point, you don’t need to return the water to the filter.
For in-ground pools, lower the water a few inches below skimmers or decorative tiles to prevent ice damage.
Inground Pool Costs
If you remove the above-ground pool during the winter and use a skimmer valve to keep water away from the skimmers during the winter, you don’t need to remove the pool. Make sure the hose is removed from the skimmer. If it rains or snows, a high water table will help hold topsoil, reducing the risk of damage. If you don’t have skimmers, you may need to reduce the water.
After separating the filter, install the waste valve. Add a backwash hose if necessary. If possible, close the skimmer valve so that only the main drain remains open.
You can dismantle the cartridge filter system and store the filter element for the winter. You don’t need to disassemble the sand filter unless you change the sand.
Open the pressure relief valve. Open the top column of the filter housing. Remove the housing and remove the cartridge.
Is Chlorine Bad Or Safe For Dogs?
Lightly spray the cartridge with a brush to remove excess dirt. Let it dry and then store it for winter. Reassemble the filter housing.
Open the pressure relief valve. Open the top column of the filter housing. Remove the housing and remove the filter net.
Lightly wipe the mesh with a sponge or fingers to remove excess dirt. Be careful not to damage the mesh. Let them dry and then store them for winter. Reassemble the filter housing.
You will need to clear the pool drainage lines for the winter. Water left in the lines can freeze and expand, causing pipes to burst.
The Swimmer,” By John Cheever
Cleaning the lines for above ground pools is usually as simple as disconnecting them and letting the water drain. Store strips in a dry and warm place.
If you have an inground pool, cleaning the lines is a process best left to the professionals, especially if you have an older system. The following general steps show you how to clean pool lines with an air compressor connected to a pool pump.
Remove the skimmer fins and replace the jet covers. Remove the drain plug from the pump and connect the compressor to the water port with the compressor hose.
Close the multi-port valve to prevent air from entering the filter. Close the main drain valve and one skimmer valve (if you have two skimmers).

Using low pressure, turn on the compressor to force the water between the lines through the skimmer. Have someone empty the excess water from the skimmer while you clean the lines. When you see bubbles coming from the skimmer lid, disconnect the filter lid and drain the remaining water from the skimmer. Then close the skimmer valve to the filter. Open the second skimmer valve and flush that line in the same manner.
After clearing both skimmers and closing the valves, open the main drain valve. Use a compressor to force water through the pipes. When you see a steady stream of bubbles in the pool, open the valve on the main outlet.
To clear the return lines, install a multi-port valve on the recirculate to allow air to flow through the return, but not through the filter. Air pressure in return lines. When you see bubbles inside
