I recently spoke with a front desk clerk about how her hotel chain distributes rooms at check-in. Curious, I asked what methods his staff uses to determine the best location to get the room. He revealed the following surprising information. Those who book through hotel websites or who are hotel loyalty members usually get room assignments with better views and quieter locations. A traveler who books through an online travel agency (OTA) like Priceline often gets a “home of the house” room (what he calls an “ice machine room” or basically a room left). The agent couldn’t tell me how many hotel chains do this, but she said it’s a “very common practice” and that it sweetens the deal for travelers who book regular rates.
Solution: Signing up for a hotel loyalty program is usually free, and becoming a member guarantees you a better room, a free night or free breakfast, or useful perks like Wi-Fi.
If securing the best room is the key to a pleasant trip, then book directly through the hotel website. But while you can’t beat those low, low OTA prices (we know that feeling), you can always request a specific room type or location.
A king bed or two doubles? High floor or low floor? No smoking? Water view? Three single red M&Ms? When booking a hotel, most booking engines allow you to request accommodations or add comments. However, in the fine print, most hotels will tell you that your request is not guaranteed.
