I can’t point to one in particular, but there is usually something in each patient’s story that moves me, especially when I see them at their lowest point without hope when they arrive, and then see the transformation that takes place when they realize it. Then they come back a year later and get their trophy…and then, still radiating hope and confidence, they come back on back-to-back birthdays and get another trophy. This brought me tears of hope and confidence!
I can’t speak for the other pastors, but my wise answer would be, “Carefully.” Then I realized it was probably descriptive of how to treat each patient…with care and compassion (and prayer). And then, it’s about meeting them where they are and working through the first seven or eight steps and applying it all to them and their situation.
I think it’s because a person can’t do it alone. We need help in our recovery journey, and that includes others and God (as we understand it).

In the conference room, you will find a series of coffee mugs on the wall. “Valley Hope has a wonderful cupping tradition,” Johnston said. “When you first come in as a patient, they give you a cup to decorate. Then we have a party where we can talk about the patient’s journey. They can talk about their journey, share their cup and hang it on our wall.”

“Just as the community felt the need for a treatment center in town, the community also wanted to have a spiritual component to O’Neill Valley Hope,” said Johnston. “The church helps the sick. We have services there every day.” The town of Emmet held services at the church until 1967. It was then moved to the Valley Hope campus and opened for the use of patients in 1979.
