Torre San Giovanni is the most famous seaside resort in the Ugento Sea, in winter it is a fishing village, but especially in summer it becomes an important and appreciated tourist destination. Its history is very old, in the past it was one of the most important strategic centers of the Ionian Sea, linked in particular to the messapic city of Ozan (today Ugento). In the port still in perfect state of preservation, the characteristic tower used as a maritime beacon. Built by the order of Charles V in the sixteenth century to protect the coast from the constant attacks of the Saracens, near stood the ancient settlement of the Roman times, which has important historical and archaeological value. In the following centuries, the spread of malaria determined the state of abandonment of the population, but in the first decades of the fascist regime, great reconnaissance work made these coasts healthy. Torre San Giovanni has been a major tourist resort for more than thirty years thanks to the construction of luxury hotels, residences, holiday villages, restaurants, discos and trendy clubs. In the long coastline characterized by fine golden sand and some rocky outcrops and low rocks that are easily accessible, we find many quality bathing facilities. The sea is clear and always clean, with a light green color due to shallow water. Not far from the coast, in the locality “Pazze”, it is possible to admire two small islands that can be easily found even by swimming. The ecosystem consists of suggestive dunes bathed in typical Mediterranean vegetation, which gives the landscape even more color and charm. During the summer there are many food and wine festivals, light music concerts, theater performances and important cultural events. On the second Sunday of August, we celebrate the Madonna dell’Aiuto, with a special procession at sea and an extraordinary fireworks display.
