The Taravie Hotel – Some Wexford suppliers are anxiously awaiting payment from the department and have been baited for amounts up to €500,000.
Newly obtained data shows that hotels, B&Bs and former care homes in County Wexford have signed contracts worth around €5m to host Ukrainian refugees in the first three quarters of this year.

The actual cost of the temporary accommodation is believed to be much higher as the deals agreed in the last quarter of 2022 will only be unveiled in 2023.

Of the ten suppliers listed, the largest contract was with Treacy’s Hotel in Enniscorthy for €904,095.
This was followed by a contract with Murgreen Ltd for accommodation at the Ros Aoibhinn old nursing home in Bunclody for €869,400, followed by a contract with Flodale Group Ltd for the old Spring Valley nursing home in Enniscorthy for €729,430.
The Sean Doyle Group was awarded a contract worth €708,400 for the use of the Upton Court Hotel in Kilmuckridge, while the contract for accommodation at St George’s Guesthouse in Wexford town was worth €473,970.
Diluca Bistor Ltd has signed a €368,550 contract for the Danby Hotel in Rosslare Road; Nando’s Property Ltd has agreed a €354,240 contract for The Wooden House at Kilmore Quay; Willoughby Quinn & Co Ltd wanted to earn €304,695 for the use of The Tarawie Hotel in Courttown; Brandon House Hotel in New Ross for €135,408 and finally Danny and Yolanda Hughes of Maple Lodge B&B in Wexford signed contracts worth €135,466 for refugees.

A few notable omissions from the list, such as the Riverbank House Hotel in Wexford and the Coast Hotel in Rosslare Strand, however, are expected to be added when details of bids awarded in the last quarter of 2022 are released in January.
Nationwide, records show that between April and June this year, hotels won 92 contracts worth nearly €100 million. A further 172 contracts were signed between July and September for a total of 90 million euros, including hotels, condominiums, student accommodation and B&Bs.
Hotel contract values provided are approximate and the actual amount paid may depend on occupancy and usage, depending on the department.
Meanwhile, speaking to Dáil Éireann, Wexford Fine Gael TD Paul Kehoe said many providers who have been hosting Ukrainian refugees were in debt to the government, in some cases as much as €1m.

Addressing the Taoiseach, Deputy Kehoe said: “I am aware of two suppliers, one a hotel and the other a centre, which have debts of over 400,000 euros. This is not an isolated incident. A hotelier I spoke to this morning said he was considering taking over his place to host Ukrainians due to a lack of money from the department.”
Speaking on Thursday in the Dáil with Children, Equality, Disability, Inclusion and Youth Minister Roderick O’Gorman, Deputy Kehoe said: ‘I have previously raised the issue of outstanding funds for hotels, bed and breakfasts and breakfasts in the Dáil with the Dáil Taoiseach Guesthouses that take in Ukrainians and refugees There are many in my constituency and these people are in dire financial need.

In response, Minister O’Gorman said his department was working on a “backlog” and the issue would be resolved in the coming weeks.
“We have entered into more than 650 individual contracts with hotels, guesthouses and bed and breakfasts in recent months,” he said. “We have to increase our capacity to handle so many contracts.
“At the request of deputies and non-deputies, I have transferred additional resources to my department specifically to collect and pay bills. That’s it.
“We are working on the backlog and have made significant progress. I believe we will be fully recovered in the next two to three weeks.
