Kahala Hotel and Resort is a luxury hotel on the island of Oahu in the state of Hawaii. It first opened in 1964 as the Kahla Hilton. Created as an exclusive retreat away from Waikiki, the resort became a popular destination for celebrities such as Frank Sinatra and Elton John. Foreign dignitaries including Queen Elizabeth II, Reverend Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama; and eight presidents of the United States.
In the mid-1990s it was called the Kahala Mandarin Oral and later became known simply as the Kahala. The resort has had captive dolphins or porpoises in its private lagoon since its first year of operation.

Before the hotel was built, the Kahala neighborhood, 12 minutes from Waikiki, was still relatively unknown to tourists.
In 1959, the land adjacent to the Viola Country Club was leased from Bishop Estates by developer Charles J. Pitts Jr., who was affiliated with hotelier Conrad Hilton.
Architect Edward Killingworth designed the original building as a 10-story structure in the shape of two rectangles.
In the early months, the hotel provided “comps” (compliments, freebies) to celebrities who helped build its image.

A 1964 article in the Honolulu Star Bulletin noted that famous guests at the Kahala Hilton included Mrs. Barbara Hutton. actors Kirk Douglas, James Garner and Harry Fonda; Counselor Lowell Thomas; Former Princess Suga of Japan; financier David Rockefeller; actress and singer Rhonda Fleming; and TV comedian Steve All.
A big change came when NBC booked every room at the Kahala Hilton for its annual partner event, bringing in big stars, including singer Andy Williams.
Kahala soon became famous for its celebrity guests, including world leaders, Hollywood and television stars, rock and roll artists and wealthy businessmen.
In early 1967, singer Danny Kilkenny was the headliner on the Hala Terrace at the Kahala Hilton.

Initially part of the Hilton Hotel Corporation, Kahala Hilton closed in March 1968, and was taken over by Hilton International.
In 2014, Kahala Hotel & Resort was sold to Japanese-owned company Resorts Hawaii for approximately $300 million.
The 6.5-acre (2.6 ha) property includes 800 feet (240 m) of beach, with sand imported from the island of Molokai.

Tucked between the Hawaiian coast and the country club’s golf course, Kahala Resort is a peaceful oasis in Honolulu. The location is unique in that it is in such a peaceful location, yet only a ten minute (free) shuttle ride from the shops, restaurants and activities of Waikiki Beach. It’s the best of both worlds. For reference, we stayed in an oceanfront room with a Juliet balcony. The spacious rooms are decorated in a classic style with light earth tones that allow the views from the large windows to be the feature they should be.
The bathroom has a nice layout for two people to share with two sinks and two separate cupboards at opposite ends. There is a nice large walk-in shower and separate bath. The bathroom is in its own closet and is equipped with a bidet toilet seat.
Hawaii Spa Getaway
When I stay at a luxury hotel, I expect luxurious linens and Kahala certainly lives up to that expectation. We had thick, soft towels, soft carpets and high quality sheets.
The rooms are very spacious with space for dining and, if needed, as a desk for business needs.
Let’s start with the resort amenities with a splash at the pool and beach. The resort has a beachfront, oval-shaped pool surrounded by sun loungers and umbrellas. There is also a small children’s pool and Jacuzzi bath. For the beach, there are deckchairs and towels for the beach and lawn areas.
For even more excitement, there is Dolphin Coast where you have the opportunity to interact with the resident dolphins. Andy and I enjoyed the Dolphin Experience in 2007. Even if you can’t get in the water with the dolphins, it’s great to see them in the lagoon.

There is plenty of wildlife to see in the saltwater ponds with juveniles (moths) and tropical fish. This is a great way to see fish without getting wet.
Kahala Resort is a great setting for a wedding and is well equipped for wedding services. We met quite a few brides and grooms during our stay.
During our recent short stay we enjoyed afternoon snacks and a really great breakfast at the Plumeria Beach House. Plumeria Beach House also offers an excellent seafood buffet on Friday and Saturday nights.
Kahala serves delicious high tea and/or cocktails and papayas with indoor and outdoor seating on the veranda.
Best Hawaii Hotel Resorts: World’s Best 2021
There is enough variety of restaurants in Kahala that you don’t have to go out of the area. If you want more options, a free shuttle service to Waikiki provides access to many other restaurants.
The hotel’s veranda (near the restaurant of the same name) is a special place to relax and enjoy the scenery. I could sit in one of the many rocking chairs for hours.
The Kahala is definitely a top Honolulu hotel choice. Some people find Waikiki, which is also part of Honolulu, a bit crowded. Kahala offers close proximity to Waikiki and the rest of Oahu, but without the crowds. Kahala is a luxury
