The Kahala Hotel And Resort – Kahala Hotel & Resort is a luxury hotel on the island of Oahu in the state of Hawaii. It first opened in 1964 as the Kahala Hilton. Developed as an exclusive retreat from Waikiki, the resort became a popular destination for celebrities such as Frank Sinatra and Elton John; dignitaries including Queen Elizabeth II, the Honorable Desmond Tutu, and the Dalai Lama; and eight US presidents.

In the first months, the hotel offers “comps” (complimtary, gifts) to famous people who helped build its image.

A 1964 Honolulu Star-Bulletin article noted that famous guests at the Kahala Hilton included heiress Barbara Hutton; actors Kirk Douglas, James Garner, and Harry Fonda; promoter Lowell Thomas; Princess Suga of Japan; financier David Rockefeller; actress and singer Rhonda Fleming; and TV comedian Steve All.

The resort is 20 miles from the Honolulu airport and a 10-15 minute drive from Waikiki, making it one of the most convenient Hawaii resorts I’ve stayed at.

Formerly known as the Kahala Hilton, the resort opened its doors in 1965. It soon became known as a Hollywood hideaway, due to its secluded location. The resort is known for hosting high-profile guests and every US president from Lyndon Johnson to Obama.

We booked an Ocean View room, which is about 550 square meters, and we had a great view of the ocean and the pool. The room was clean and comfortable and the bathroom was spacious.

If you love Italian food, you will love Arancino. We ordered two pizzas and a nice salad and took dinner to the beach. Everything was fresh and delicious. I would recommend the Arancino even if you don’t live in Kahala.

When you stay at the Kahala Hotel, you may have breakfast at the Plumeria Beach House. You can save on Opentable, but we both had no problem getting into it.

There is usually a delicious breakfast, although it is closed due to COVID regulations. Make this papaya boat at home – it’s delicious.

Enjoy cocktails and live music on the Veranda at sunset. The menu is small and mostly includes appetizers, but we enjoyed some of the delicious sushi here.

The largest of Kahala’s restaurants, Hoku’s offers 4 and 8 course menus with ocean views. We didn’t visit this restaurant but I like that they offer a vegetarian tasting menu.

Seaside Grill is a pool/beach restaurant. It’s very tasty and a great option if you want to take a salad, taco, or mai tai to the beach. The food is nothing special, so I recommend bringing something to the beach from Whole Foods.

Kahala Beach is a dream. This private beach has clean, soft white sand and shallow, warm, turquoise water. There are two manned islands/islands to protect the beach. This is a beautiful beach and great for children. We had no trouble finding a spot for our lounge chairs, and unlike Waikiki, there were no crowds.

The Kahala Inn offers canoes and kayaks for rent, but it was too windy while we were there to enjoy them.
