The Kahala Hotel is a legendary resort located just outside of Honolulu. It’s away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki and sits on an idyllic private lake – Kahala Beach.

The Kahala Hotel is located on the other side of Diamond Head from Waikiki. This is the best location if you want a quieter and more relaxing holiday. In Kahala, you can avoid the crowds but easily walk to Waikiki for shopping, dining and city life.
The resort is about a 20 minute drive from the Honolulu airport and a 10-15 minute drive from Waikiki, making it one of the most convenient Hawaii resorts I’ve stayed at.
Known as the Kahala Hilton, the resort opened its doors in 1965. Thanks to its private location, it quickly became known as a Hollywood hideaway. The resort has been famous for hosting many famous guests and every US President from Lyndon Johnson to Obama.

We booked an ocean view room which is approximately 550 square feet. We had a beautiful view of the ocean and the resort. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and the bathrooms are spacious.
If you like Italian food, you’ll love Arancino. We ordered a couple of pizzas and a nice salad and brought dinner to the beach. Everything was fresh and delicious. I would recommend Arancino even if you are not staying in Kahala.
When staying at the Kahala Hotel, you will likely have breakfast at the Plumeria Beach House. You can save on Opentable, but both have no problem getting in.
Always great breakfast although closed due to COVID regulations. Make this papaya boat at home – it’s delicious.
The Kahala Hotel & Resort, In Honolulu, United States
Enjoy cocktails and live music on the veranda at sunset. The menu is small and mostly includes appetizers, but we enjoyed some delicious sushi rolls here.
The highest quality of Kahala’s restaurants, Hoku’s offers 4- and 8-course degustation menus with ocean views. We haven’t visited this restaurant but I like that they offer a veggie snack menu.
Seaside Grill is a pool/beach restaurant. It’s very casual and a good choice if you want to bring a salad, taco, or mai tai to the beach. Food is not essential, so I recommend bringing something from Whole Foods to the beach.
Kahala Sea is a dream. This private beach has clean, soft white sand and shallow, warm, turquoise water. It has two peninsulas/islands for coastal protection. It is an ideal swimming beach and great for children. We had no problem finding a spot for lounge chairs and unlike Waikiki it wasn’t crowded.
Kahala Hotel & Resort Celebrates 50+ Years On Oahu
Paddleboards and kayaks are available for rent at the Kahala Hotel, but it was too windy to enjoy them.
Many families book this hotel and special Dolphin Quest experience for the dolphin pool. Although the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin family is beautiful, it is sad to see them confined to a small artificial pool and used for photographs.
Most, if not all, animal rights groups like the Humane Society of the USA, PETA, and the Dolphin Project agree that you shouldn’t swim with whales on vacation.
A much more magical experience can be watching fish, dolphins and whales in their natural habitat. Try snorkeling or fish watching.
The Kahala Hotel & Resort Pet Policy
Compared to other 5-star resorts in Hawaii, Kalaha’s pool area is abysmal. There is a small oval-shaped swimming pool on the property. The pool is crowded and packed with kids in the afternoon. If you want a deck chair, be sure to bring it out early in the morning.
Kahala Beach is so beautiful that the lack of a fun resort pool doesn’t bother me, but if I have young kids who want a pool, it can be a disappointment. If you want a resort with a waterfall and lazy river, check out the Grand Hyatt Kauai or Kea Lani Maui.
Kalaha Hotel & Resort has everything you really need, but you might want to do a little exercise.
We didn’t see much fish at Kahala Beach, but there was great fishing nearby. Next, we make a reservation at Hanauma Bay, which is a conservation area, now a marine life preserve.

The Diamond Head Crater Tour is a popular activity in Honolulu. There are other travel options. I like the AllTrails app for trip planning.
We didn’t spot any surfers at Kahala Beach during our stay, but there are some amazing spots nearby. Waikiki Beach has many surf schools for beginners.
There are numerous nearby golf courses and country clubs that you can access as a guest of the Kahala Hotel.
Although you don’t actually have to leave the property, I recommend going out and trying some of the local restaurants. It will save you money and offer a change of scenery and a more authentic local experience.
Visit Kahala: Best Of Kahala, Honolulu Travel 2022
Our first stop was the Kahala Whole Foods to stock up on local produce, snacks and drinks to stock our mini fridge in the room.
I recommend enjoying the power of Waikiki one night and the small town area another. We love Sushi Hawaii which is a 10 minute Uber ride away.
Kahala Mall is about 20 minutes from the hotel and has a variety of shops and a very good Whole Foods. For a more lively shopping experience, head to Waikiki.
We flew from SBA to LAX on HNL with United. From the airport, we took an Uber to the resort, which was a 20-minute drive away.

I was glad to skip the hassle of renting a car on this trip and we never needed one. Getting around on foot or by Uber is easy once you leave the resort.
I booked our hotel and airfare package through American Express Platinum. It was quick and easy and allowed me to use points to pay for most of the trip.
It’s just a shame that when booking, this hotel is listed in the Fine Hotels & Resorts program as including daily breakfast and an upgraded room. However, we later discovered that this is not the case if you book a package with a free airline.
Some resorts offer day passes so you can enjoy the resort without staying at a hotel. You can book a day pass or a cab at Kahalas on the Pass Resort. This is a great option if you live in a vacation home and want to enjoy Kahala Pool and Beach.
