Hawaii is one of my favorite travel destinations. I love Kauai and Maui, but for a recent mother-daughter trip, we chose Oahu. Come join us at the Kahala Hotel & Resort.

The Kahala Hotel & Resort Package

The Kahala Hotel is a legendary resort just outside of Honolulu. It is removed from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki and is located on an idyllic private lagoon – Kahala Beach.

Here’s our overview of the Kahal Hotel restaurants, beach, dolphin lagoon and more. If you​​​​are looking for a 5-star Oahu resort, you can not miss this incredible review of Kahala Hotel & Resort.

The Kahala Hotel is located just across Diamond Head from Waikiki. This is an ideal location if you prefer a quieter, more relaxing holiday. At the Kahala, you can avoid crowds but have easy access to Waikiki for shopping, dining and city life.

The resort is about a 20 minute drive from the Honolulu airport and a 10-15 minute drive from Waikiki, making it one of the most convenient Hawaii resorts I’ve stayed at.

Then known as the Kahala Hilton, the resort opened its doors in 1965. It quickly became known as a Hollywood hideaway, thanks to its private location. The resort is known for hosting many famous guests and every US President from Lyndon Johnson to Obama.

The Kahala Hotel & Resort, Honolulu

We booked the Ocean View room, which was about 550 square feet. We had a beautiful view of the sea and resort. The room was clean and comfortable and the bathroom spacious.

If you love Italian food, you will love Arancino. We ordered some pizzas and a beautiful salad to go and took our dinner to the beach. Everything was fresh and delicious. I would recommend Arancino even if you don’t stay at the Kahala.

If you​​​​are staying at the Kahala Hotel, you will probably have breakfast at Plumeria Beach House. You can book on Opentable, but the two of us had no trouble walking in.

There is usually a delicious breakfast buffet, although it was closed due to COVID protocols. Make this papaya boat at home – it’s delicious.

Ultimate Jet Vacations

Enjoy a cocktail and the live music on the veranda at sunset. The menu is small and mostly includes appetizers, but we enjoyed some delicious sushi rolls here.

Hoku’s, the most luxurious of the Kahala restaurants, offers 4- and 8-course tasting menus with ocean views. We have not tried this restaurant, but I think they offer a vegetable tasting menu.

Seaside Grill is the pool/beach restaurant. It’s very comfortable and a nice option if you want to take a salad, taco or mai tai to the beach. The food was nothing special, so I recommend bringing something from Whole Foods to the beach.

Kahala Beach is a dream. This private beach has clean, soft white sand and shallow, warm, turquoise water. It has two man-made peninsulas/islands to protect the beach. It is an ideal swimming beach and ideal for children. We had no problems finding a spot for our lounge chairs, and unlike Waikiki, there were no crowds.

The Veranda At The Kahala Resort Restaurant

The Kahala hotel offers paddle boards and kayaks for rent, but it was too windy while we were there to enjoy them.

Many families book this hotel and the Dolphin Quest experience specifically for the dolphin lagoon. While the family of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins are lovely, it is heartbreaking to see them confined to a small man-made pond, and exploited for photographs.

Most, if not all, animal rights groups such as the Humane Society of the USA, PETA and the Dolphin Project agree that you should never swim with dolphins on vacation.

A much more magical experience can be made by seeing fish, dolphins and whales in their natural habitat. Try snorkeling or a whale watching experience.

The Kahala Hotel & Resort Yokohama, Yokohama

Compared to other 5-star Hawaiian resorts, the pool area at the Kalaha was underwhelming. There is one relatively small basic oval shaped swimming pool on the property. The pool is bought in the afternoon and full of children. If you want​​​​a lounge chair, be sure to put one out early in the morning.

Kahala Beach is so beautiful that the lack of a luxury resort-style pool did not bother me, but if I had small children who wanted a pool, I could be disappointed. If you prefer a resort with a water slide and a lazy river, check out the Grand Hyatt Kauai or Kea Lani Maui.

The Kalaha hotel & resort has everything you really need, but you might want to venture out a little.

We didn’t see many fish right off Kahala Beach, but the snorkeling is great. Next time we will make a reservation at Hanauma Bay, which is now a marine life conservation area.

Walking Diamond Head Crater is a popular activity in Honolulu. There are other hiking options as well. I love the AllTrails app to plan my hikes.

We didn’t see any surfers right on Kahala Beach during our stay, but there are surf spots nearby. There are several surf schools for beginners right on Waikiki Beach.

There are several golf courses and country clubs nearby that you have access to as a guest of the Kahala hotel.

Although you don’t actually have to leave the property, I recommend venturing out and trying some of the local restaurants. This will save you money and provide a change of scenery as well as a more authentic local experience.

Kahala Residents Fear Hotel’s Beach Wedding Venue Plans Would Privatize Shoreline

Our first stop was the Kahala Whole Foods to pick up some local fruit, snacks and drinks to stock our in-room mini fridge.

I recommend one night to enjoy the energy of Waikiki and another quiet local place. We loved Hawaii Sushi which was about a 10 minute Uber ride.

Kahala Mall is about a 20 minute walk from the hotel and has many shops and a very nice Whole Foods. Head to Waikiki for a more vibrant shopping experience.

We flew from SBA to LAX to HNL on United. From the airport we took an Uber to the resort, which was about a 20 minute ride.

The Kahala Hotel & Resort In Honolulu, Hawaii

I was happy to skip the hassle of renting a car on this trip and we didn’t need one at all. Getting around by foot or Uber was easy the few times we left the resort.

I booked our hotel and flight package through American Express Platinum. It was quick and easy and allowed me to use points to pay for much of the trip.

The only disappointment was that when booking, this hotel was listed in the Fine Hotels & Resorts program as offering daily breakfast and a room upgrade, among other benefits. However, we later found out that this is not the case when booking a package with flight tickets included.

Some resorts offer day passes so you can enjoy the resort without actually staying at the hotel. You can reserve a day pass or cabana with the Kahala on Resort Pass. This is a great option if you are staying in a vacation home and want to enjoy the pool and beach at the Kahala.

We loved our time at the Kahala Hotel & Resort. The pristine white sand beach, warm turquoise water and peaceful location can’t be beat. The resort itself is beautiful with several great restaurants and friendly staff. When our kids were younger, I preferred a resort with more pool activities. The price point was lower than most other 5 star Hawaii hotels. If you are looking for a relaxing luxury Honolulu hotel on the beach, I would recommend the Kahala.
