The Kahala Hotel is a great resort outside of Honolulu. It is located on a beautiful private lake – Kahala Beach, away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki.

The Kahala Hotel is located across from Diamond Head in Waikiki. This is the perfect place if you prefer a quieter, more relaxing vacation. In Kahala you can escape the crowds, but easily access Waikiki for shopping, dining and city life.
The resort is about 20 minutes from the Honolulu airport and 10-15 minutes from Waikiki, making it one of the most convenient resorts in Hawaii that I have stayed at.

Then known as the Kahla Hilton, the resort opened its doors in 1965. Because of its private location, it soon became known as a Hollywood haven. The resort is known for hosting many famous guests and every US president from Lyndon Johnson to Obama.
We booked an ocean view room that was about 550 square feet. We had a beautiful view of the ocean and the resort. The room was clean and comfortable, and the bathroom was spacious.
If you love Italian food, you will love Arancino. We ordered pizza to go and a great salad and went to the beach for dinner. Everything was fresh and delicious. I’d recommend the arancino even if you’re not in a rush.
While staying at the Kahala Hotel, you may have breakfast at the Plumeria Beach House. You can make reservations on OpenTable, but none of us had trouble getting in.
The Best Hotels In Oahu For Every Traveler
There is usually an excellent breakfast buffet, however it was closed due to the COVID protocol. Make this papaya boat at home – it’s delicious.
Enjoy cocktails and live music on the veranda as the sun sets. The menu is small and mostly consists of appetizers, but we enjoyed some delicious sushi rolls here.
The highest level of Kahala’s restaurants, Hoku offers 4- and 8-course menus with sea views. We haven’t been to this restaurant, but I love that they offer a vegetarian tasting menu.
Seaside Grill is a pool/beach restaurant. It’s very casual and a great option if you want a salad, taco or Mai Tai on the beach. The food was nothing special, so I recommend getting something from Whole Foods on the beach.

Kahala Beach is a dream. This private beach has clean, soft white sand and shallow, warm, turquoise water. It has two man-made peninsulas/islands to protect the beach. This is an ideal swimming beach and great for children. We had no trouble getting our seats and unlike Waikiki, it wasn’t crowded.
The Kahala Hotel offers paddleboards and kayaks for rent, but it was too windy when we were there to enjoy them.
Many families book this hotel and Dolphin Quest experience specifically for the Dolphin Lagoon. Although a family of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins is cute, it’s heartbreaking to see them in a small man-made pool and to use their photos.
Most, if not all, animal rights groups such as the U.S. The Humane Society, PETA and the Dolphin Project agree that you should never swim with dolphins on vacation.

Watching fish, dolphins and whales in their natural habitat can be a very magical experience. Try snorkeling or a whale watching experience.
Compared to other 5 star resorts in Hawaii, the pool area at Kalaha was minimal. The property has a relatively small original oval shaped pool. The pool is bought and filled with children in the afternoon. If you want a lounge chair, be sure to get one early in the morning.
Kahala Beach is so beautiful that the lack of a luxury resort-style pool didn’t bother me, but if I had small children who wanted a pool, I might be disappointed. If you prefer a resort with water slides and a lazy river, check out the Grand Hyatt Kauai or Kea Lani Maui.
Kalaha Hotel and Resort has everything you really need, but it can be a bit of a walk.
Kahala Resort Honolulu
We didn’t see many fish off Kahala Beach, but there is great snorkeling nearby. Next time we will make a reservation at Hanauma Bay, which is now a Marine Life Conservation Area.
Hiking Diamond Head Crater is a popular activity in Honolulu. There are other hiking options as well. I love the AllTrails app for planning my hikes.
We didn’t see any surfers at Kahala Beach during our stay, but there are surf spots nearby. Waikiki Beach has several surf schools for beginners.
There are several nearby golf courses and country clubs that you will have access to as a Kahala hotel guest.
Pool, Beach & Activities
While you don’t actually have to leave the property, we recommend checking out and trying some of the local restaurants. This will save you money and provide a more authentic local experience with a change of scenery.
Our first stop was a quick Whole Foods to pick up some local fruit, snacks and drinks for our in-room mini-fridge.
I recommend a night to enjoy the energy of Waikiki and a more low key locale. We loved Hawaiian Sushi which was about a 10 minute Uber ride away.
Kahala Mall is about 20 minutes from the hotel and has lots of shops and a great Whole Foods. For a more active shopping experience, visit Waikiki.

We flew United from SBA to LAX in HNL. We took an Uber from the airport to the resort, which was about a 20 minute drive.
I would have happily skipped renting a car on this trip and we didn’t need to. Once we got out of the resort, it was easy to get around by foot or Uber.
I booked our hotel and airfare package through American Express Platinum. It was quick and easy and allowed me to use points to pay for most of the trip.
The only disappointment was that when booking this hotel was listed in the Fine Hotels & Resorts program which included daily breakfast and room upgrades. However, we later found out that this is not the case when booking packages including airfare.

Some resorts offer day passes so you can enjoy the resort without actually staying at a hotel. You can book a day pass or a cabana at Kahla with the resort pass. This is a great option if you are staying for a vacation and want to enjoy the pool and beach in Kahala.
We loved our time at Kahala Hotel and Resort. The pristine white sand beaches, warm turquoise waters and tranquil location cannot be beat. The resort itself is nice with some good restaurants and friendly staff. When our kids were younger, I preferred a resort with more pools. The price was lower than other 5 star hotels in Hawaii. If you are looking for a comfortable luxury hotel on Honolulu Beach, I highly recommend the Kahala.
