Hawaii is one of my favorite travel destinations. I love Kauai and Maui, but for a recent mother-daughter trip, we chose Oahu. Join us at the Kahala Hotel and Resort.
The Kahala Hotel & Resort Hawaii
The Kahala Hotel is a legendary resort outside of Honolulu. Removed from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki and set on a picturesque private lagoon – Kahala Beach.

Here’s a review of Kahl Hotel’s restaurants, beaches, dolphin lagoon, and more. If you’re looking for a 5-star Oahu resort, you can’t miss this unbiased Kahala Hotel and Resort review.
Kahala Hotel is located on the other side of Diamond Head from Waikiki. It is an ideal place if you prefer a quiet and more relaxing holiday. In Kahala, you can avoid the crowds but still have easy access to Waikiki for shopping, dining, and city life.
The resort is about a 20 minute drive from the Honolulu airport and a 10-15 minute drive from Waikiki, making it one of the most convenient Hawaiian resorts I’ve ever stayed at.
Then known as the Kahala Hilton, the resort opened its doors in 1965. It quickly became known as a Hollywood hideaway, thanks to its private location. The resort is famous for many celebrity guests and every US president from Lyndon Johnson to Obama.
The Beach At The Kahala Hotel, Now And Then
We booked an Ocean View room, which is about 550 square meters. We had a beautiful view of the sea and the resort. The room was clean and comfortable with a spacious bathroom.
If you like Italian food, you will love Arancino. We ordered some pizza and a nice salad to take our dinner to the beach. Everything was fresh and delicious. Even if you don’t live in Kahala I recommend Arancino.
When staying at a Kahala hotel, you’ll likely have breakfast at the Plumeria Beach House. You can make a reservation at OpenTable, but it’s no problem for two people to get in.
There is usually a good breakfast buffet, although it is closed due to the COVID protocol. Make this papaya boat at home – it’s delicious.
Hawaii’s Classics Are Calling
Enjoy cocktails and live music on the veranda at sunset. The menu is small and consists mostly of appetizers, but we enjoyed some delicious sushi rolls here.
The most upscale of the Kahala restaurants, Hoku offers 4- and 8-course tasting menus with ocean views. We haven’t visited this restaurant but I love that they offer a vegetarian tasting menu.
Beach Grill is a pool/beach restaurant. This is a very casual and great option if you want to grab a salad, taco, or mai tai on the beach. The food is nothing special, so I recommend bringing something from all the food to the beach.
Kahala Beach is a dream. This private beach has clean, soft white sand and shallow, warm, turquoise water. It has two man-made peninsulas/islands guarding the beach. This is an ideal swimming beach and great for children. We had no problem finding a spot for a lounge chair, and unlike Waikiki, it wasn’t crowded.

Kahala Hotel offers paddleboards and kayaks for rent, but it was windy when we got there to enjoy them.
Many families book this hotel for the Dolphin Lagoon with a special Dolphin Quest experience. While the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin family is cute, seeing them confined to a small man-made pool, and exploited for photos, is heartbreaking.
Most, if not all, animal rights groups like the Humane Society of the United States, PETA, and the Dolphin Project agree that you shouldn’t swim with dolphins on vacation.
An even more magical experience is seeing fish, dolphins and whales in their natural habitat. Try a snorkeling or whale watching experience.
Kahala Hotel & Resort
Compared to other 5-star Hawaiian resorts, the pool area at Kalaha was minimal. The property has a relatively small oval bottom pool. A swimming pool is bought and filled with children in the afternoon. If you want a lounge chair, be sure to make a bet early in the morning.
Kahala Beach is beautiful enough that the lack of a luxury resort-style pool doesn’t bother me, but I might be disappointed if I have young children who want a pool. If you like resorts with waterslides and lazy rivers, check out the Grand Hyatt Kauai or Ke Lani Maui.
Kalaha Hotel and Resort has everything you need, but you might want to go a little outside.
We didn’t see many fish near Kahala Beach, but there was great snorkeling nearby. Next time we will make a reservation in Hanauma Bay, which is now a protected marine life conservation area.

Hiking Diamond Head Crater is a popular activity in Honolulu. There are other hiking options as well. I love the AllTrails app for planning my hikes.
We didn’t see any surfers at Kahala Beach during our stay, but there are surf spots nearby. There are many surfing schools for beginners on Waikiki beach.
There are several golf courses and country clubs nearby that you can access as a guest of Kahala Hotel.
Although you don’t actually have to leave the property, I recommend getting out and trying some of the local restaurants. This will save you money and provide a change of scenery as well as a more authentic local experience.

Our first stop was Kahala Whole Foods to pick up some local fruit, snacks and drinks to stock our mini fridge in the room.
I recommend one night and another to enjoy the energy of Waikiki at a low-key local spot. We loved Hawaiian Sushi, which was about a 10 minute Uber ride away.
Kahala Mall is about a 20 minute walk from the hotel and has lots of shops and all very good food. For a more vibrant shopping experience, head to Waikiki.
We flew SBA on United from LAX to HNL. From the airport, we took an Uber to the resort, which was about a 20-minute ride.
A Place To Discover Hawaii’s Aloha Spirit With Family
I was happy to skip the hassle of renting a car on this trip and we didn’t need one. It was easy to walk or use Uber when we visited the resort.
I booked our hotel and airfare package through American Express Platinum. It’s quick and easy and allows me to use points to pay for multiple trips.
The only disappointment is that at the time of booking, the hotel was registered in the Hotels Fine & Resorts program with other perks including daily breakfast and room upgrades. We later found out, however, that this is not the case when booking a package that includes airfare.
Some resorts offer day passes so you can enjoy the resort without actually staying at a hotel. You can reserve a day pass or cabana at Kahala with the Resort Pass. This is a great option if you are staying in a vacation rental and want to enjoy Kahala’s pool and beach.
Kahala Hotel Pulls Environmental Assessment For Expansion Of Wedding Sites
We loved our time at the Kahala Hotel and Resort. The pristine white sand beaches, warm turquoise waters, and tranquil location can’t be beat. The resort itself is beautiful with some great restaurants and nice staff. When our kids were younger, I preferred a resort with more pool activities. The price point is lower than many other 5-star Hawaiian hotels. If you’re looking for a comfortable Honolulu hotel on the beach, I recommend the Kahala.
