Flamingo Hotel In Las Vegas
When the Flamingo turned 50 in 1996, there was no celebration or fanfare. There has also been no public acknowledgment of the resort’s origins and Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel’s mob ties.
Las Vegas was in a period of cultural transition. The era of mafia rule ended in the mid-1980s. With megaresorts like The Mirage, Treasure Island, and Luxor opening all over the Las Vegas Strip, Las Vegas has become conscious of its public image.
“Bugsy’s image was never particularly attractive to the Flamingo or the Hilton,” Flamingo Hilton spokesman Terry Lindbergh said in 1996, the Las Vegas Sun reported at the time. This was not George Washington or Abraham Lincoln. We are talking about robbers, rapists. and murderers. These are not wonderful qualities. We want to remember Flamingo history without glorifying it. We’ve made a conscious decision to distance ourselves from Bugsy’s legacy.”
The flamingos don’t exactly celebrate the group that opened the resort, but they are now somewhat aware of their origins.
Flamingo Hotel And Casino
In 2020, the Flamingo introduced the new Bugsy and Myers Steakhouse, a retro-style restaurant named after two gangsters, Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lansky. There is also a monument to Siegel in the resort’s famous flamingo habitat.
“I think it’s just about acknowledging the true history of Flamingo. It’s an undeniable piece of history unique to Flamingo, and we felt it was appropriate to rely on it and share it. It certainly doesn’t justify the way we operate, but it’s part of Flamingo history.” said Sean McBurney, president of regional operations for Caesars Entertainment, the current operator of the Flamingo.
