“They don’t really have many predators,” Liptak said. “The biggest damage they usually get is from poachers trying to steal their eggs.”

“Of the six species of flamingos, their diet varies depending on how deep their beak is – so when they turn their head upside down, they swing it back and forth,” she said. “Inside the banana-shaped beak are very small flaps or folds called lamellae.”
“When they pull the water in, the tongue pushes it out and the little traps catch all that food,” she said. “Chilean flamingos eat more algae and vertebrates—small crustaceans, and the algae give them that color.”
Carotenoid pigments – the same substances that turn carrots orange – are what make flamingos pink. Creatures are not born with a light hue.

“They give them milk with a high content of this pigment,” Liptak said. “So sometimes they’ll look a little paler.”
As mammals, flamingos live exclusively on an extremely nutritious secretion known as “crop milk” for two months. The glands that line the upper digestive tract of the parent flamingo produce a fat-rich substance that also contains a pigment that helps growing birds gain color.
“They have a lot of arguments, a lot of disagreements,” Lipták said. “During the breeding season, they are hormonal, so that’s why when you looked at them before they went into the pond to eat the krill, they were arguing in the back, fighting over nesting places and saying, ‘I was here first’.” Just like a soap opera you’d see on TV.”
Peachy, a transplant from a Midwestern zoo, has lived in the habitat since the summer of 2007. She envisions a young lady.
