Stay On Main Los Angeles – The Los Angeles City Council voted Tuesday to approve landmark status for a building in the Historic Core. Developer Matthew Baron of the Simon Baron project, which is turning the Cecil into a boutique hotel and micro-unit apartment complex, has applied for the designation.

The city noted that the hotel, which opened in 1924, represented the lodging industry of the early 20th century in the United States, a time when guests began to turn from country retreats to city hotels.

The Cecil’s location near Seventh and Main Streets made it popular with business travelers who wanted to be close to Spring Street, then a major financial center called the “Wall Street of the West.” It was also popular with theatergoers who flocked to the great halls of Broadway.

Built in the Beaux Arts style, the building has been altered over the years, but a city report says the building “continues to maintain a high level of integrity” in terms of design, materials and feel.

Cecil is on the rise, and it’s a big change of pace for a man with such a long history of unhappiness.

When the Cecil opened in 1924, it catered exclusively to businessmen, but the Great Depression hit the hotel hard. His customers became more transient and less sophisticated.

In the 1980s, the hotel’s notoriety reached new heights – it was discovered that serial killer Richard Ramirez, nicknamed the Night Stalker, lived in the Cecil Hotel for two years. During this time he killed 13 people.

In 2013, a guest disappeared and was found floating in a water tank on the roof of the hotel for almost three weeks. Her death was eventually ruled an accident, but her strange disappearance and grainy security footage documenting her first hours at the hotel inspired Los Angeles’ infamous “The Cecil Hotel” (now renamed “Stay on Main”), which was first open. almost a century ago, in 1927. The very name of this hotel causes a wave of fear and anxiety among those who know its reputation as a place of violence, murder and suicide.

Countless horrific events have taken place at the Cecil, and Netflix even released a documentary based on the events that took place at this hotel, titled

It mainly focuses on Elisa Lam, a Canadian student who mysteriously disappeared from the hotel after a series of suspicious incidents. She was found dead in the hotel’s water tank 19 days later. The four-part documentary series, directed by Joe Berlinger, explores the troubled past of the supposedly “haunted” hotel.

Stay On Main,  is located at 640 South Main Street, near the part of downtown Los Angeles nicknamed “Skid Row”. The hotel’s website describes the location as follows: “The location is located in a charming part of Los Angeles, a few minutes’ drive from the Los Angeles Convention Center. The Museum of Contemporary Art is 1 km away. Guests can enjoy American, French, European and Italian cuisine at Bottega Louie Restaurant, approximately 650 meters away. Hotel Cecil offers excellent accommodation close to the reserve.”

Strange Deaths At The Cecil Hotel

Currently, the Hotel Cecil/Stay on Main is currently not open to the public as it is undergoing renovations and will be converted into a mix of hotel rooms and apartments. Once the renovation is complete, it will likely reopen to guests and the public. After Lam’s death in 2013, the hotel continued to operate for four years before closing in 2017 and has yet to reopen. Plans to completely remodel the interior and address the building’s issues were in the works, complete with a gym, lounge and rooftop pool.

In 2007, the Cecil Hotel was sold for $26 million, and later in 2011, it was rebranded and renamed the “Stay on Main”. Hotelier Richard Born paid $30 million to buy the hotel in 2014.

The renovation is expected to be completed sometime in 2021, although the corona virus may have further delayed the process.

In the case of Elisa Lam, it was not the first time that death had cast a shadow over the Cecil Hotel. Over the decades, Cecil has been the scene of many suicides, overdoses, murders and even hosted two serial killers who stayed there during their killing spree, one of them being Richard Ramirez; the man about whom Netflix released another documentary.

At least three murders have been linked to Cecil, and more than 16 unexplained deaths and suicides have occurred there — from suicidal poisonings to overdoses to a woman throwing her newborn baby out a window. However, CEO Amy Price (who worked there from 2007 to 2017) told Netflix that she saw about “80 deaths” in the 10 years she worked there.
