Is The Cecil Hotel Still Open?
The city decided that the hotel, which opened in 1924, represented the lodge industry of the early 20th century in the United States, a time when guests were turning away from rural retreats and toward urban hotels.
Cecil’s location near Seventh and Main Streets made it popular with business travelers who wanted to be close to Spring Street, then a major financial hub known as the “Wall Street of the West”. It was also crowded with theatergoers heading to Broadway attractions.
Built in the Beau Arts style, the building has been modified over the years, but a city report says the building “maintains a high level of integrity” in terms of its design, materials and feel.
Cecil is on an upswing, and it’s quite a change of pace for a PC with such a long history of success.
Where To Stay In Los Angeles
When the Cecil opened in 1924, it was aimed at business people, but the Great Depression hit the hotel hard. His clients became more transient and less sheltered.
In the 1980s, the hotel’s notoriety reached new heights – it was revealed that serial killer Richard Ramirez, nicknamed the Nightstalker, had stayed at the Cecil for two years. During that time he killed 13 people.
In 2013, a guest went missing and was found floating in the hotel’s rooftop pool about three weeks later. Her death was eventually ruled an accident, but prompted by grainy security footage documenting her mysterious disappearance and her hours at the hotel.
