New York’s public pools are an oasis for heat-weary New Yorkers every summer, whether they’re taking a dip in the cool water or just swimming in the pool. With over 60 public pools around New York’s five boroughs, there are certainly options to choose from. Here is our comprehensive list of clean and completely free swimming pools in New York.

Since we don’t condone a bottle sneaking past the locker room, we’ve suggested some after-sun spots to hydrate with frozen cocktails while enjoying delicious bar food and snacks. Do you want to sprinkle above ground? Several of NYC’s top hotels have rooftop pools that allow non-hotel guests to enjoy the amenities (at a bargain price, of course).

New York City’s public outdoor pools open for the season on June 28. Two pools are closed this season due to active reconstruction projects: Tony Dapolito Pool and Harlem Meer Center (formerly Lasker Pool) in Central Park.

Olympic-sized tracks, plenty of beach lounging, and WPA-era art deco decor have made it a city favorite for decades. But before you dive in, be sure to take in the sights: Nestled between Robert F. Kennedy and the Hell Gate Bridge, this summer oasis offers stunning views of the Upper East Side—the perfect setting for a tour anytime. Afterwards, grab a pint at the nearby Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden on your way back north.

This chlorine mecca sits on the border between Williamsburg and Greenpoint, making it a beacon for North Brooklynites. Be prepared to wait: the pool, renovated and reopened in 2012, draws people. After the dip, swing chicken and waffles to top you off.

This Olympic-sized pool is one of the largest in the city and attracts neighborhood residents and children, as well as swimmers from all over lower Manhattan. Although there’s no deck furniture, the pool is surrounded by a wide strip of concrete, so there’s plenty of room to roll up a towel, stretch out and watch the masses descend. Postpool, grab a chicken souvlaki and Greek-style fries with feta a few blocks west of Souvlaki GR.

This Yorkville swimming hole sits right on the edge of the East River, and visitors can spy Roosevelt Island from the footbridge that connects John Jay Park to the East River Esplanade over the FDR. The 145-foot pool itself is lined with lush trees, creating a bucolic feel for a swim or poolside lounge. When you’re parched, welcome summer with a glass of rosé in Uva.

Staten Island’s largest public pool is also one of New York’s oldest—it was one of 11 pools built by the Works Progress Administration in 1936 to provide jobs during the Great Depression. The main pool can accommodate 2,800 swimmers at a time. There’s also a separate plunge pool and a collection of jet showers for kids to run around on hot summer days. Indulge in Sangria and Spanish tapas at Beso before boarding the ferry after all that splashing.

After that, head to Arthur Avenue, which is in the northern part of the park. Here you will find the best Italian food in New York.

Neighborhood kids make up the majority of swimmers, as the nearest subway station is more than a kilometer’s walk from the park. If you want to make a day of it, head to Area 53 next door for some paintball.

Although swimming spots like the Astoria Pool got rid of diving ages ago, you can still practice your swan dive in the deep end of the West Village. While its 100-by-50-foot footprint doesn’t offer the expansive space of its Olympic-sized counterparts, there are still lap lanes, and a Keith Haring mural painted on the back wall helps make for a more holistic aquatic experience. Later, you can head to the Shake Shack a block south or to Jack’s wife Freda.
