About Career Travel Professional Team Development Partner Investor Partner News Blog Bill Tony Capuano’s Blog In 2006, there was a change in tides and one Costa Rican tourism pioneer from the north decided that he would buy his catamaran companion under the name Marlin del Rey. At this point there are no plans for the catamaran, but it will come to Playa Tamarindo from Playas del Coco the next morning. He is the new owner of a 66′ sailing catamaran previously residing in northern Guanacaste, Costa Rica. And now what?
During a slow 2-hour Pacific Ocean cruise to Playa Tamarindo, Greg Ruzicka called his nephew, Jeff Ruzicka, and asked what they could do on the boat there. Over the phone they decided that since Jeff is busy with Tamarindo Vista Villas as GM and has access to clients who want to experience the ocean, why not take a tour of the bustling surf town? Tamarindo is still a very small town with dirt roads and surf but with the arrival of the beautiful catamarans it is adding new features to the area.
It all started slow. The catamaran suffers wear and tear and all the money that goes into the business goes into repairs and upgrades. Tours are gradually starting to have repeat customers and the equipment, service, food and drink are known to be among the best in the business.
Marlin Del Rey Catamaran
Just as the housing market collapsed in the US in 2007, Marlin del Rey continued its rise to become the best water park in Guanacaste. This is not an easy task as the economy in North America influences tourism in Costa Rica. This is also around the same time that Liberia becomes an International Airport and some direct flights will become a reality.
In 2010, Marlin del Rey hosted daily tours for private groups and solo travelers to chill out, and the big decision became clear: Take the plunge or play it safe?
With things going as smoothly as they could in Costa Rica, Greg and Jeff decided to take the plunge and buy another catamaran and risk it all. With the Liberia airport and hotels popping up in northern Guanacaste, it’s time to get another boat so tourists can experience the north as surfers in the south. A new Marlin is on its way.
Keeping things in the family, Greg enlisted a few other nephews to help out on this trip. Oldest nephew Greg is waiting for his new job to become available, so he decides to bring his vacation experience to ST. Croix to help two others sail the New Marlin across the Caribbean to Colon, Panama. Let’s just say it’s more of an experience than a vacation. Another nephew, Bret, went with Greg and Jeff to Colon, Panama and joined Bill and some of the crew in getting the boat through the Panama Canal and up to Costa Rica, where it would be flagged and mounted.

The New Marlin is a custom made 65′ Sailing Catamaran from the same maker as Marlin del Rey. There are many improvements and changes that make it ideal for private and private tours.
The trip took 10 days as Greg has been a resident of Costa Rica since 1988 and has traveled to both sides of Costa Rica, the Caribbean and beyond, he tends to know everyone and has to stop and say hello to everyone. Bill needed to get his new job started so he flew back to the US before the trip ended, but Brett stayed and joined the team at Playas del Coco where New Marlin has now called home since February 8, 2011.
