The Kahala Hotel is a legendary resort located just outside of Honolulu. It is removed from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki and on an idyllic private lake – Kahala Beach.

The Kahala Hotel is located on the other side of Diamond Head from Waikiki. This is the best place if you want a quieter, more relaxing vacation. In Kahala, you can escape the crowds but still have easy access to Waikiki’s shopping, dining and city life.
The resort is about 20 minutes from the Honolulu airport and 10-15 minutes from Waikiki, making it one of the most convenient resorts in Hawaii that I have stayed at.
Then known as the Kahala Hilton, the resort opened its doors in 1965. It quickly became known as a Hollywood haven thanks to its private location. The resort is known for hosting many famous guests and every US President from Lyndon Johnson to Obama.

We booked an ocean view room which is about 550 square feet. We had a beautiful view of the ocean and the resort. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and the bathrooms are spacious.
If you like Italian food, you will love Arancino. We ordered some pizzas and a nice salad to go and brought dinner to the beach. Everything was fresh and delicious. I would recommend the arancino even if you are not staying in Kahala.
When you stay at the Kahala Hotel, you will most likely enjoy breakfast at the Plumeria Beach House. You can save on Opentable, but both are easy to log into.
There is always a great breakfast, although it is closed due to COVID regulations. Make this papaya boat at home – it’s delicious.

Enjoy cocktails and live music on the veranda as the sun sets. The menu is small and mostly consists of appetizers, but here we enjoyed some delicious sushi rolls.
The highest quality of Kahala restaurants, Hoku’s offers 4- and 8-course tasting menus with ocean views. We didn’t visit this restaurant, but I like that they offer a vegetarian snack menu.
Seaside Grill is a pool/beach restaurant. It’s very casual and a good option if you want to bring a salad, taco, or mai tai to the beach. Food is not necessary, so we recommend bringing something to the beach from Whole Foods.
The Kahala Sea is a dream. This private beach has clean, soft white sand and shallow, warm, turquoise water. It has two peninsulas/islands to protect the coast. This is a great swimming beach and great for kids. We had no trouble getting our seats and unlike Waikiki, it wasn’t crowded.
Reviews Of Kid Friendly Hotel
The Kahala Hotel offers paddleboards and kayaks for rent, but it was too windy when we were there to enjoy them.
Many families book this hotel and the special Dolphin Quest experience for the dolphin pool. Although a family of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins is beautiful, it is sad to see them confined in a small artificial pool and used for photographs.
Most, if not all, animal rights groups like the Humane Society of the U.S., PETA, and the Dolphin Project agree that you shouldn’t swim with whales on vacation.
A much more magical experience can be watching fish, dolphins and whales in their natural habitat. Try snorkeling or fish watching.
Play With Dolphins At This Hawaii Resort For An Absolutely Adorable Adventure
Compared to other 5-star resorts in Hawaii, the pool area at Kalaha is underwhelming. There is a small oval shaped pool in the property. In the afternoon, the pool is crowded and filled with children. If you want a lounge chair, be sure to bring it out early in the morning.
Kahala Beach is so beautiful that I don’t mind the lack of a fun resort pool, but if I have small kids who want a pool, it can be a disappointment. If you want a resort with a waterfall and lazy river, check out the Grand Hyatt Kauai or Kea Lani Maui.
Kalaha Hotel & Resort has everything you really need, but you might want to exercise a little.
We didn’t see many fish at Kahala Beach, but there was some great fishing nearby. Then we will make a reservation in Hanauma Bay, which is a protected area that is now a Marine Life Conservation Area.

Touring Diamond Head Crater is a popular activity in Honolulu. There are other travel options as well. I like the AllTrails app for planning my trips.
We didn’t spot any surfers at Kahala Beach during our stay, but there are some amazing spots there. There are many beginner surf schools on Waikiki Beach.
There are numerous golf courses and country clubs nearby that you will have access to as a Kahala hotel guest.
While you don’t really need to leave the property, we recommend going out and trying some of the local restaurants. This will save you money and provide a change of scenery as well as a more authentic local experience.

Our first stop was the Kahala Whole Foods to pick up some local produce, snacks and drinks for our in-room mini-fridge.
I recommend enjoying the power of Waikiki for one night and another small town area. We love Sushi Hawaii which is a 10 minute Uber ride away.
Kahala Mall is about 20 minutes from the hotel and has a variety of stores and a very good Whole Foods. For a more lively shopping experience, head to Waikiki.
We flew from SBA to LAX on HNL on United. We took an Uber from the airport to the resort, which was a 20-minute drive away.
Great Eats Hawaii: The Kahala Hotel And Resort
I was happy to skip the rental car on this trip and we never needed to. Getting around on foot or by Uber is easy once you leave the resort.
I booked our hotel and airfare package through American Express Platinum. It was quick and easy and allowed me to use points to pay for most of the trip.
The only regret is that when booking, this hotel is listed in the Fine Hotels & Resorts program, which includes daily breakfast and room upgrades among other benefits. However, we later found out that this is not the case when you book a package with an affordable airline.
Some resorts offer day passes so you can enjoy the resort without staying at a hotel. You can reserve a day pass or a cabana at Kahala at the Pass Resort. This is a great option if you live for vacation and want to enjoy the pool and beach in Kahala.

We loved our time at the Kahala Hotel & The pristine white sand beach, warm turquoise water and tranquil location cannot be beat. The resort itself is wonderful with a variety of excellent restaurants and friendly staff. When the kids were younger, I would have liked a resort with more pools. The price is lower than other 5 star hotels in Hawaii. If you are looking for a relaxing hotel on Honolulu Beach, I recommend the Kahala. The Kahala Resort is a luxurious hotel where you can relax and unwind in Honolulu. The classic interior design speaks to the hotel’s long history of Hawaiian hospitality.
The resort staff is friendly and welcoming. Guests are greeted with an aloha refreshing bright towel and a beautiful lei on the check.
Located between Hawaii’s Great Beach and Golf Course, Kahala Resort is a peaceful oasis in Honolulu. Its location is unique in that it is located within such a resort, yet only a ten minute walk (free) from the shops, restaurants and activities of Waikiki Beach. It’s the best of both worlds. For the record, we stayed in a beachfront room with a Juliet balcony. The large rooms are decorated in a classic style with earthy tones, allowing the views from the large windows to be what they should be.
Review: Honolulu Luxury At The Kahala Hotel & Resort
The bathroom has a good layout for two people to share two vanities and two separate closets at opposite ends. There is a nice size shower and a separate shower. The toilet is in its own closet and is equipped with a bidet toilet seat.
When I stay at a luxury hotel, I expect luxurious linens, and the Kahala definitely lived up to that expectation. We have thick, fluffy towels, blankets and high quality clothing.
Rooms are generously sized for dining and, if needed, as a desk for business needs.
