We decided that the “Family, fins and fun” package is the best for three-year-old Augustin. Although Augustine never got to fully immerse himself in the water with the dolphins, he had the opportunity to see, feel, listen and feed two of them up close.

Having only seen pictures of dolphins in books, Augustine was over the moon to actually see one and was amazed at how intelligent these majestic creatures were.
If you have small children, our program was perfect for initial acclimatization with the dolphins. We were with another father and son family visiting from Japan.
I won’t try to beat you if that’s your attitude. Kahala’s programs and habitats are certified by American Humane and the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums. I also fundamentally believe that animals are meant for humans, not equal to them or worthy of certain rights and protections afforded to humanity…which is why I eat meat and don’t create zoos because of it.
And yet I recognize the moral dilemma… I’ve never hunted in my life and it’s twisted for me, although I can’t reconcile that feeling with my willingness to eat mass-produced meat in even more inhumane (and that word again) conditions. I am not rigid and open to persuasion on this point.

How To Get From Honolulu Airport To Kahala Hotel & Resort
There were six dolphins. Each weighed between 350 pounds and 600 pounds. They eat anywhere from 15 to 45 pounds of fish a day!
Fun fact: Hoku has a restaurant named after him! The best part of the whole experience was seeing how happy and well cared for the dolphins were!

Dolphin Lanai Room
When you book Kahala through American Express Fine Hotel & Resorts, you’ll receive a number of perks, including early check-in and late check-out (subject to availability), complimentary breakfast, available room upgrades, and dining credit (which varies by season). ). It makes an expensive hotel a little more palatable.
I mention this every time I write about Kahala, but I really appreciate the longevity of the staff at this hotel. For example, Darryl. He is part of the parking crew and has been greeting me as I drive to the hotel for years. The front desk staff, restaurant staff and even the housekeepers are part of the reason I love this property. They are all nice, friendly and have jobs.
We were assigned a Dolphin Lanai room which, as the name suggests, overlooks the Dolphin Lanai. It was my first time staying in a room behind the tower, and part of me wanted to upgrade to a tower room with a great ocean view. But I’ve looked into it before…it would be something new and convenient to get to the pool, something that was central to my three year old’s staycation plan.
Our room had two beds, although Augustine and I always seem to share a bed when we travel alone.

The room has a large balcony overlooking the lagoon. Although the hotel was supposedly sold out, I rarely saw the neighbors on the balcony.
The bathroom has a separate shower and bath and a sink on both sides. Toilets have Toto seats with a heater and a bidet.
The coffee machines are Keurig, a huge disappointment as I think Keurig is the worst coffee in the world (illy machines are in the suite). Bottled water is free and refilled twice a day.
We arrived around noon and had lunch together at Plumeira, one of the hotel’s restaurants. My dad had a cheeseburger, my mom had a fish taco, and Augustine and I each had a cheese pizza.

The pizza was soggy and my mom didn’t like her fish tacos because they were too spicy so I ate them and we left one of the pizzas. Augustin and I could easily have shared one.
We spent the rest of the afternoon… and the next late morning and afternoon at the pool. Augustin likes to swim and really wanted to show his grandparents what he learned in swimming lessons.
As you can see, the hotel is simply beautiful. It’s much quieter than Waikiki and feels like an outer island even though you’re only minutes from downtown Honolulu. This makes it an ideal hotel for children and families.
There may be more exceptional hotels on the island, but I have no interest in straying from this wonderful hotel, which in my eyes creates a unique value proposition for visiting Honolulu.
