The former hotel at 640 S. Main Street in Los Angeles, California was built in 1924 by W. B. Hanner, a brash hotelier who planned to build one of America’s most luxurious boutique destinations. Three years later it opened as The Cecil and enjoyed a fairly glamorous reputation until the Great Depression, when the hotel began a dramatic decline.
From the 1930s to the 1960s, a series of shocking suicides occurred in Cecil. This included guests cutting their throats, jumping out of windows and poisoning themselves. There were also several murders, the most high profile of which was the unsolved brutal murder of Goldie Osgood in 1964.
Another infamous murder associated with Cecil is that of Elizabeth Short, who was rumored to have visited the hotel shortly before her very public death.
The story of the Black Dahlia and the Cecil Hotel has been mostly revealed, although the location of her mutilated body is quite close to Main St. If nothing else, the rumor contributed to the dark mythology that seemed to curse the one-time luxury hotel.

Chances are, if you’re the type of person who Googles Cecil’s story, you’re also the type of person who knows about Richard Ramirez. If not, the scoop on Ramirez and his connection to Cecil is that he stayed there at some point during his horrific killing spree in Los Angeles from the spring of 1984 to the summer of 1985.
Speaking of serial killers, Austrian journalist Jack Unterweger also stayed at the hotel in the early 1990s while researching and writing about crime and sex workers in Los Angeles.
His time at Cecil came just years after he was released from an Austrian prison, where he was serving a reduced sentence for—wait for it—murder. Once in Los Angeles, he immediately started killing again. His victims were all sex workers.
Perhaps the most famous blow to Cecil’s reputation came in early 2013, when one of its guests, Alyssa Lam, appeared missing during her stay.

After Elisa was found dead in one of the hotel’s water tanks a few weeks later, her story spawned countless conspiracy theories, Reddit threads and YouTube videos, many of which paid little credit to the victim herself.
While some speculated that Alice was caught up in a murder plot with a possible cover-up, others analyzed Lam’s mental state and even suggested paranormal influences. Ultimately, her death was ruled accidental.
Another aspect of the Cecil Hotel’s heritage is the nearby Skid Row neighborhood in downtown Los Angeles. This area contains one of the largest populations of homeless people in the country and is considered a humanitarian crisis.
Skid Row is just a few blocks away from the Cecil Hotel, creating a downtown environment that is both a bustling business district and a place of extreme impoverishment. The attempts to control the neighborhood as well as increase it resulted in years of ineffective city policy, legislation and policing.

Despite decades of operation near Skid Row, the Cecil has continued to thrive, its image shifting from a stop for wealthy business travelers to an affordable short-stay option for commuters. Unfortunately, the hotel with 600 rooms did not quite keep up with the times.
From the lack of air conditioning to a series of known security issues, the hotel has earned a reputation for shady behavior and violence. In 2011 it was renamed Stay On Main, which remains open as a hotel with a few micro-apartments thrown in. Even then, he still found himself on the receiving end of terrible customer service reviews on sites like Yelp and TripAdvisor.
To me there is nothing scarier than bad customer service, especially when it comes to where you are staying. And my, did Cecile ever have bad customer reviews!
According to Google’s most reliable reviews (some of which are just mini-blogs about the Alisa Lam case), the hotel has consistently received poor ratings for loud parties, thin walls, bedbugs, shared bathrooms, and rooms with no air conditioning. If you’re like me, the thought of a Los Angeles summer without air conditioning is a real nightmare come to life.

When did Stay On Main close? It’s hard to say for sure. In 2008, business developer Fred Cordova took over the hotel and tried to cash in on the gentrification boom. But the Great Recession put a damper on that.
By 2014, the hotel was sold to a new owner, and according to these rave Yelp reviews, it appears to have been open to the public until late 2016 or early 2017, when it was designated a historical landmark. The hotel appears to have officially closed to short term tenants in 2017.
Beginning in 2015, a New York developer named Simon Baron purchased a 99-year lease on the Cecil and shifted the towering building’s focus to a mixed-use facility. Traditionally, these types of projects include housing, office space and retail. But who really knows? Like his past, Cecil’s future is full of mystery, intrigue and probably more rumors than true.
But in the summer of 2020, I got an email from a reader who said, “I live in a building a few doors down [from Siel]. I’ve seen some workers coming in and out lately and I just passed by. Signing up now for $900/month apartments.”

According to LA Curbed, the construction and renovation plans were expected to be completed by mid-fall 2021, with at least a few rooms open for occupancy, but that didn’t come to fruition. The pandemic has slowed efforts, and as of late 2022, the Cecil Hotel is still closed to all of the few long-term residents who reportedly live there.
Hopefully, the next phase at 640 Main Street will prove to be an asset to the businesses and neighborhoods that surround it. Until then, the Cecil Hotel’s infamous legacy lives on, even though most of its rooms are dark and empty.
