This has led to some “interesting” moves by the company, fan backlash, theories, and more. In this post, we will try to answer the question:
The Star Wars story begins with “The Wonderful World of Disney: A Magical Holiday Season,” which aired just after Thanksgiving and featured Imagineer Ann Morrow Johnson and Goldberg actor Sean Gimbron. The two take a brief tour of the Halcyon starship, which only shows the bridge, the bar, and some corridors.

Personally, I’m mostly confused that Disney would advertise a boutique experience that is so expensive and (ABC) would be advertising a boutique experience during a holiday special and aimed at a mainstream audience. Also, one of my biggest frustrations is that Walt Disney World talks to users who sound like they are 8 years old rather than adults. I’ve come to think it’s a “me problem” because other fans seem to share this opinion.

I was surprised that some widely read tech and pop culture sites took issue with the video’s downbeat and dark tone. (Maybe Disney should do a better job knowing their audience and “turn off” the juvenile tone in their marketing aimed at regular people who aren’t super fans?) The critics also took issue with the substance of Showed up, and honestly, I missed the presentation in frustration.
Walt Disney World is no stranger to the marketing that didn’t get it in 2021, so this wasn’t particularly obvious. However, Disney’s response:
Disney has since removed the video from YouTube, and has completely scrubbed the clips from social media. This is noteworthy for two reasons. First, because there are so many articles that include the clip when criticizing or promoting Star Wars, the stars of the galaxy, and now they have almost no marketing value. Posts about an “inside view” of Star Wars: The Galactic Starcruiser were leveled when the video above was replaced.
Second, just a few months ago, Disney released a series of videos related to Gen+ and Lightning Rod, one of which was the “most disliked” Disney Parks video of all time. (The rest did the same) yet they all stand. This led many fans to believe that there is more to the story, and a deeper explanation for Disney taking Star Wars the next step: the galactic starcruiser’s YouTube and social media.

This is one scenario. The second is 90 days before the final installment “sails” aboard the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. The sign is now available for early reservations, and they are being canceled disproportionately. Some of the guests may not like what they see in the latest marketing and actively cancel their reservations as a result.

However, there was also some volatility – we mentioned it in our November update to our Star Wars Galaxy Star Guide. This video can enhance the total amount of cancellation. It is also possible that the company is too sensitive here because it is a new and unprecedented product, and there is a lot on the line.

Judging by fans’ responses, I think there is a lot of truth in the previous comment – many people do not like what they see. I think there is also some truth in the latter statement, because March is disproportionate to the earliest dates. If this was due to a bad experience, the cancellations should be spread evenly over the months – but they aren’t.
It should also be noted that the payback is very fast. What is on the calendar varies from hour to hour. Last few days I saw the first sailings open, booked and re-booked. I never saw anything from March to June. The thing is that the current calendar is not set in stone, and can be as small as one room.
On a related note, we saw a lot of Walt Disney World fans cheering for the failure of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. I suspect there are a variety of reasons for this, ranging from mischief to unrelated guest-unfriendly decisions to general frustration at Disney’s handling of Star Wars. Some aspects of this I “get” even if I don’t agree.
Personally, I think there’s a big difference between hoping it fails and wanting to be rejected for Gen+ or other extra fees by fans after hours. In the latter scenario, the company may be forced to back down on price increases, nickel and diming or other cuts. User feedback is very healthy and can lead to improvements on the front, or other recommendations that can be easily modified.
Disney’s Immersive ‘star Wars’ Hotel Costs What Now?
Not so in Star Wars: The Galactic Starcruiser, which includes a physical infrastructure worth over a hundred million dollars. Whatever “lesson” Disney learns, if it fails, I can assure you, the company will face no major consequences.
They are either overpriced or out of touch with the middle class. People don’t want Disney’s version of Star Wars. They do not have to drive more than expensive housing. The company has extensive market research on all of these, and these decisions will continue regardless of product adoption.
For better or worse, Star Wars: The Galactic Starcruiser is an undeniably envelope-pushing concept that allowed Imagineers incredible creative freedom. This is one of the biggest risks Imagineering has allowed in a long time. It’s easy to miss this because we all often wear blinders or are biased based on our personal preferences. Putting them aside, it should be easy to see that the Galactic Starcruiser is big, bold and relatively unprecedented.
In particular, Imagineering has created something outside the box that offers total immersion, interactivity, fun and personalization in a highly themed environment. If the galactic starcruiser fails, the conclusion will be that guests do not want immersion, interactivity, entertainment, personalization or a highly themed environment. Apparently most of the people reading this are not at one price point or another.
