With a year-round population of 500, Mackinac Island’s winters are mild compared to the nearly 5,000 daily visitors that arrive during high season. With few lodging options, a restaurant or two, and no public bathrooms, here are a few things you should know before planning a winter vacation on Mackinac Island.
Is The Grand Hotel Open Year Round
Winter on Mackinac Island is a good time to take things slow. Enjoy a good book, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing on ample trails, take the perfect winter photo, and enjoy some peace and quiet on beautiful Mackinac Island. Although winter is not what most people think of when they think of Mackinac Island, it is a special time to visit this special place. Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka
The Star Line Hydro-Jet Mackinac Island Ferry offers a ferry that operates as long as there is no ice in the harbor. The ferry departs from St. Ignace in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and costs $39 for a round-trip ticket for adults.
The ferry schedule varies throughout the winter and generally runs about three times a day, sometimes only six days a week. You can find updates and announcements on Facebook about departure times, weather delays and additional flights during special winter weekend events.
Traveling to Mackinac Island is an option, especially when the ferry is out of service due to ice in the harbor. Great Lakes Air and Fresh Air Aviation offer year-round service to Mackinac Island from St. Ignace, weather permitting. Tour prices range from $35-$45 per person for a one-way ticket.
There are several places open at different times on Mackinac Island in the winter. These include Above Mackinac Condos, Cottage Inn, Lilac Tree Suites, Small Point B&B, The Mackinac House, The Pontiac Lodge and Village Inn Suites. The Royal Grand Hotel
Mackinac Island Taxi Service is available to assist with transportation during the day if needed. Reservations are required for service before 8:00 a.m. or after 5:00 p.m.
Mackinac Wheels rents fat tire bikes by reservation. Call them ahead to reserve your bike and explore Mackinac Island in the winter. Remember to bring your own skis and snowshoes as there are no rentals available on Mackinac Island.
In the winter, there are one or two restaurants open, as well as a grocery store, Doud’s Market, which offers sandwiches and other food options. Mustang Lounge is generally open year-round, and Broken Spoke is usually open during the off-season as well. Information on both restaurants can be found on the Winter on Mackinac Island page.

Each season on Mackinac Island is unique and beautiful in its own colorful way. Tulips usually bloom in early spring around mid-May, followed by tulips in the first few weeks of June. The gardens of the Grand Hotel are always blooming with flowers appropriate for the season.
Fall colors in northern Michigan can be difficult to predict, as they depend on the temperature of the season. If we’ve had a warmer summer, the colors tend to change in October later than usual. Michigan weather makes everything on Mackinac Island and across the state unpredictable, but that’s what makes a visit here a pure Michigan experience, no matter the month.
There is no actual room from the film; However, the Grand Hotel has two suites dedicated to the film: a Somewhere in Time Suite and a Jane Seymour Suite. Both rooms are decorated with memorabilia from the movie.

Tipping is not expected in the restaurants and lounges within Hotel Grand, however, guests may reward our team members for exceptional service. Tipping is expected and welcome at the restaurants and lounges outside the Grand Hotel: Woods Restaurant, The Jockey Club in the Grand Stand, Fort Mackinac Tea Room, The Gate House, Esther Williams Pool Bar, and Astor’s Salon and Spa.
Cupola Bar is located in the upper part of the hotel on the 4th floor. Follow the stairs there to the Cupola Bar where you’ll find two levels of seating, an extensive cocktail menu, nightly entertainment and panoramic views of the Straits of Mackinac and the Mackinac Bridge.

The Grand Hotel is able to accommodate most dietary needs. All of our restaurants, including the main dining room, offer gluten-free menu options. Guests are asked to visit the concierge desk after check-in to work with the hotel’s assistant managers and chefs to accommodate any unique dietary restrictions.

The Grand Hotel offers guests a variety of activities to enjoy during their stay, including a round of golf at The Jewel, tennis, pickleball, swimming in the Esther Williams Pool, cycling, horseback riding and more. The Esther Williams Pool is located at the western end of the Tea Garden opposite the hotel. The pool is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00. The slide is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 – 17:00. Hours of the day may vary; Please contact our concierge for updated hours or if they are closed for an event.

Every evening at the Grand Hotel is a special occasion.
