This looks like a PR nightmare for MGM, but I’m sure they care about protecting their fellow citizens… As anyone with a basic knowledge of Las Vegas history knows, notorious mobster Bugsy Siegel Flamingo He was the owner of the hotel and Casino, when it was opened. On December 26, 1946, his door.
It was his passion project in the desert and brought an elegant Art Deco charm to the proto-Strip, which at the time consisted of a few Old West themed arcades. And it would have hastened Siegel’s demise within six months of opening, perhaps due to his poor management and oversight of the resort.

Iconic Flamingo Casino Paying Homage To Past With $90 Million Remodel
Shortly after Siegel was shot and killed in Los Angeles in 1947, his partners Gus Greenbaum and Mo Sedway, their partners in another successful Vegas venture, the El Cortez, realized what motivated Siegel. They made style and luxury accessible to everyone and cemented it as a cornerstone of the Vegas resort era.
The property changed hands in 1960 to a Miami group that included Morris Lansburgh and Daniel Lifter, the first of many sales during its existence. In 1967 Flamingo was sold to Kirk Kerkorian. In 1970, he sold it to Hilton, which in 1998 spun off its gaming division, including the Flamingo. In 2005, it sold to its current owner, Harrah’s Entertainment, along with the rest of the Harrah’s portfolio known as Caesars Entertainment.
The inimitable Mr. Las Vegas Wayne Newton played his first Vegas concert in 1963 at the Flamingo. Newton was only 21 at the time, but had been making a living as a lounge and opener for the biggest names of the era for years. Newton, who has been a resident both on and off the Strip for decades, will return to the Flamingo for a limited run starting January 24th.
The Flamingo Hotel, then the Flamingo Hilton, first expanded in 1976 to 1,250 rooms. Further expansion occurred in the 1980s and 1990s. The property currently includes approximately 3,500 rooms and suites.
Desert Diamond: The Flamingo Turns 75′
The last of the original structures was demolished in 1993. This includes the Bugsy Suite, also known as the Presidential Suite. But Bugsy’s presence has survived – a monument to the gangster now stands in the yard.
The wildlife habitat was opened in 1995 and features pink feathers.
