When the Flamingo turned 50 in 1996, there was no celebration, no fanfare for the occasion, no public acknowledgment of the resort’s origins and ties to Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel and the mob.
Las Vegas was experiencing a cultural shift. In the mid-1980s, the Mafia era came to an end. Mega-resorts like the Mirage, Treasure Island, and Luxor opened all over the Strip, and Las Vegas became increasingly concerned about its public image.
“Bugsy’s image wasn’t exactly appealing to the Flamingo or the Hilton,” Flamingo Hilton spokesman Terry Lindberg said in 1996, as reported by the Las Vegas Sun at the time. “It wasn’t George Washington or Abraham Lincoln. We are talking about a robber, a rapist and a murderer. These are not attractive qualities. We want to remember the history of Flamingo without embellishing it. We have consciously chosen to distance ourselves from Bugsy’s legacy.”
Las Vegas Strip Flamingos Living The Life, Here’s A Look
Flamingo doesn’t glorify the mobsters who opened the resort, but there is now some degree of recognition for their heritage.
In 2020, Flamingo unveiled a new Bugsy and Meyer’s Steakhouse, a retro-inspired restaurant named after the two mobsters, Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lansky. There’s even a plaque to Siegel, now located in the resort’s famed flamingo habitat.
“I think this is just an acknowledgment of the true history of the Flamingo. It’s an undeniable part of the story and it’s something unique to Flamingo and we felt it appropriate to build on and share it. Certainly not to justify the way it works, but it’s part of Flamingo’s history,” said Sean McBurney, President of Regional Operations for Caesars Entertainment, Flamingo’s current operators.
Combined with moves like the mob museum opening a decade ago, UNLV history professor Michael Greene said the acceptance shows the city’s maturity, “that we can really look back on that mob past and let’s just say we’re too nostalgic. ” about it, but still look at it and understand it.”
Flamingo Las Vegas Kicks Off Its Milestone 75th Anniversary Celebration
Now The Flamingo, 75 years old, is the oldest resort on the Strip. Its past, which spans everything from the Mafia to Kirk Kerkorian and the ten-year run of Donnie and Marie Osmond, is a reflection of the Streep’s history and the iconic gang’s ability to reinvent itself over and over again.
“This hotel is truly a watershed moment for Las Vegas,” said Larry Gregg, professor emeritus of history at Missouri State University of Science and Technology and author of the 2015 book Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel: Gangster, Flamingos, and the Making of Modern Las Vegas. .
Siegel got most of the credit for opening Flamingo, but the idea to build a Miami Beach-style hotel in Southern Nevada actually came from his former business partner, Billy Wilkerson.
Wilkerson was a successful Los Angeles businessman in the 1930s and 1940s who founded The Hollywood Reporter and owned several popular nightclubs along the famous Sunset Boulevard. He was also an avid gambler who regularly spent thousands of dollars at a time in Las Vegas, according to his son Willie Wilkerson, who wrote a biography of his father called The Hollywood Godfather: The Life and Crimes of Billy Wilkerson.
Bugsy Siegel Opens Flamingo Hotel
One evening, Wilkerson confessed his gambling problem and resulting financial problems to his friend Joseph Schenk, a wealthy film executive and chairman of 20th Century Fox. Schenk, a gambler himself, came up with a solution to Wilkerson’s problems: build a casino and own a house.
“The conclusion was that if you lose, the money is intelligently recycled. So my father, by losing the most time, will be able to satisfy his addiction and at the same time earn money for his casino. So it was like a win-win. Actually, it all started with this,” says Willy Wilkerson.
Wilkerson began building the resort in 1945, but the project ran out of money in early 1946 when the avid gambler lost hundreds of thousands of dollars at other casinos in the city.
Enter Siegel, an old mob fighter who has already established himself in the Las Vegas scene through horse racing wire services and investments in other Fremont Street casinos. Wilkerson needed money and the mob was his willing partner. Siegel and his partners bought two-thirds of the project and eventually ousted Wilkerson.

Siegel raised the bar for luxury for the project, and with it the price. The cost of building the resort skyrocketed from $1.2 million to about $6 million by the time it was completed.
Finally, on December 26, 1946, Flamingo opened its doors for the first time. And it was done in the spirit of Vegas: The three-day grand opening brought together top headliners, including radio comedy star Jimmy Durante and bandleader Xavier Cugat.
But not so long ago the problems started. The resort opened with an unfinished hotel and a series of gambling losses, which historians including Gregg attribute mainly to terrible bad luck, finally forced the resort to close after only six weeks. The Flamingo reopened after the completion of the hotel on March 1, 1947 and was a great success.
On June 20, 1947, Siegel was shot to death at his girlfriend Virginia Hill’s Beverly Hills home. This murder remains unsolved to this day, although most historians believe the Mafia was somehow involved. Gregg said more than a dozen people have been offered to play the assassin over the years.
