The Chelsea Hotel has been home to cultural icons from Janis Joplin to Andy Warhol. As controversial renovations continue, Colin Miller photographs the hotel’s final apartments and their occupants.

In 2015, an architectural firm approached me to photograph some of the renovations they were doing to the historic Chelsea Hotel after the building was sold. I forgot the photo I took, but when I looked up the iron stairs I saw something from the hotel’s past. Pieces of tenanted artwork adorn the stairwells and amid the chaos of construction are clear signs of a vibrant community of residents who deeply care for their homes. At the time I only had a vague sense of Chelsea, mainly through the movie Sid and Nancy and from living in New York on the fringes of the punk scene.
