Times Square was packed with tourists, Broadway goers and office workers (or at least those who still do). Often referred to as the “crossroads of the world,” it’s a vibrant and lively area of the city that’s a must-see for first-time visitors and an area to avoid for New Yorkers.

Tourists pay extra to stay here, often at mega-hotels like the Marriott Marquis — one of the most popular redemptions in the Bonvoy program.
Just steps away from the madness, however, is another Marriott option, The Chatwal, a luxury boutique hotel with just 76 rooms and suites.
It felt like the perfect mid-week stay for my wife and I – a quick, kid-free getaway just 1.5 miles from our home, but miles away mentally.
This hotel is not cheap. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to maximize your spending there.

The base rate for a King Deluxe room, approximately 270 square feet, is $735. As a Bonvoy member, booking the same room directly through Marriott costs $720.
However, booking through Amex gave me a guaranteed 16:00 noon check-in. Check out, daily breakfast for two and possible room upgrade. It also comes with a $125 property credit, which I know I’ll use for dinner at the hotel’s popular restaurant, The Lamb’s Club. Finally, Amex Platinum cardholders can earn up to $200 in credit per year when they make prepaid reservations at Fine Hotels + Resorts.
79,000 to 91,000 Bonvoy points per night for the same room. Based on TPG’s current valuation, those points are worth between $663.60 and $764.40, which could be a bargain when taxes are factored in. For example, my one-night stay cost $846.92, including the whopping NYC lodging tax.
The free breakfast and $125 dinner credit still make the Amex booking a better deal, especially since as a Titanium Elite member I earned 6,095 Bonvoy points worth $51 based on TPG reviews. That said, if I wasn’t eating at the hotel (and testing all the benefits for you) and using my $200 credit (which I have), I’d probably use the points for the stay.

The main reason we chose The Chatwal was its central location. Walking distance to Times Square and minutes from other popular attractions such as Rockefeller Center and Bryant Park. This area is perfect for first-time visitors to New York, visitors with Broadway theater tickets, or those doing business downtown.

The hotel is housed in a 1905 building designed by Stanford White, part of the legendary architectural trio McKim, Mead & White. It originally opened as The Lambs, a professional theater club near the Broadway Centre. In 2010, the building was renovated and opened as The Chatwal, named after Dream Hotel Group founder Sant Singh Chatwal.

The hotel’s history is evident in its lobby and other public spaces. I’ve always been a big fan of its small but charming Art Deco lobby with an atrium leading to the second floor bar. A huge clock – one of the hotel’s signature features – hangs beyond the reception. You won’t spend hours in this room, but just a walk through it takes you back in time.
I started checking in the day before on the Marriott app, but I knew I would still have to go to the front desk to get my key.
On the day of arrival I messaged the hotel through the app to see if it was possible to upgrade to Titanium elite membership. Then I waited – and waited some more. I didn’t hear back until more than four hours later, during which time I was sitting in my room. Well then.
When I arrived at the hotel around 3pm, two porters were waiting to help with luggage – a treat in this age of limited staff. A quick walk up six flights of stairs brings me to reception.

He was not expected at the reception. The representative was helpful, gave me a letter outlining all the benefits I could get by booking through Amex Boutique Hotels + Resorts, explained the single category room upgrade and gave me a bottle of water.
Moments later, I was in the elevator, on my way to my room on the third floor. (My wife will arrive later.)
My upgraded room was a “Grand Deluxe” king overlooking 44th street, about 350 square feet. The only real upgrade from the entry level king room I originally booked was a small sitting area and street view.
The wardrobe is impressive and can comfortably accommodate a wardrobe much larger than my night wardrobe. There is a tray where you can put your shoes and the hotel maid comes to shine your shoes for free. Plush robes and slippers are kept in the closet. I couldn’t be happier.

Then I looked at the rest of the room – well, well. It’s clean and comfortable, but not luxurious or luxurious enough to justify the $700+ nightly room rate. The desk and armchair have seen better days; scratches and dings all over. The room felt very cramped, even by NYC standards. It’s technically big, but none of the furniture is really attractive and makes it feel smaller. Thick dirt on the windows blocked my view of the street below.
There are many scratches, marks and writing on various switches that have been wiped off. One side of the bed had easily accessible outlets on the nightstand, the other did not. In other words: time for a light renovation.
No room, let alone a bathroom, should have as much mirror space as this one. Additionally, the tiles are flecked with glitter, adding more reflective surfaces to the room. Even though the hotel is only 12 years old, the bathroom feels like it’s been thrown back in time to the 1970s and Studio 54. (At least without the disco balls?)
The Asprey bath products are nice, but I found it odd to see plastic cups in the bathroom – especially when you’re paying for them. Would it be too much to ask for a better glass? Maybe it’s a pandemic-era discount that hasn’t been reversed yet.

Back in the bedroom, there is a small TV hanging on the wall. The bed was comfortable but not memorable.
Despite being in the heart of Manhattan, the double-glazed windows did an excellent job of keeping out the noise of the city and I slept soundly all night.
This is where The Chatwal shines. I would come to this hotel for a pre-theatre drink or a business breakfast or lunch well in advance of my overnight stay.
There are very few places near Times Square where you can sit and sit back with a nice cocktail. For me, Chatwal has always been that oasis – dating back to the days when I earned Starwood Preferred Guest points for my dining tab there.

But the real star has always been The Lambs Club, a cozy restaurant off the lobby named after the Lambs, the theater club that once occupied the building. Before the pandemic, this was one of New York City’s most influential lunch spots, and it was possible to sit down at an inviting table surrounded by crimson leather banquettes and vintage photos of stars from stage and screen.
The restaurant recently reopened under chef Michael White, the man behind Michelin-starred restaurants Marea and Ai Fiori in New York — two of my favorite restaurants. After I booked my stay, I also booked dinner.
My wife and I started the meal with Fluke Crudo and a phenomenal plate of raw scallops, which were fresh, rich in texture and delicious. I continued with the special lamb chops – shockingly my favorite dish – cat casserole with lobster, clams and scallops in a spicy tomato sauce. We finished with what the menu described as a chocolate cake sundae, maraschino, chantilly, baked bananas, chocolate pearls and Maldon salt. sounds like a lot
