Is Star Wars Land Open – Disney has released a series of updates about Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, including the opening of the Disneyland and Walt Disney World seasons, the name of the village on Batuu, and some additional concept art. Opening times are most relevant for vacation planning, with Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge debuting in summer 2019 at Disneyland and late fall 2019 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Additionally, Disney revealed that a village in the Galaxy’s Edge is called Black Spire Outpost, which is a famous stop for traders, adventurers, and smugglers traveling through the Outer Rim and Wild Space. During discussions at the event, Imagineers confirmed rumors that Galaxy’s Edge would feature full-sized AT-ATs, that the second ride (after the Millennium Falcon ride) would take place aboard a Resistance transport ship, and that it would A kind of “creature stall”.

We’re late with this “news” so there’s a good chance you’ve already read about it somewhere else. If not, here’s a link to an article on the Disney Parks blog that has new concept art and details about the Black Spire Outpost on Batuu in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Rather than rehash those details here, I’m going to focus on what I find most interesting: the opening of “seasons” for the respective Star Wars lands…
Disneyland Introduces Park Specific Blockout Dates That Could Reveal The Opening Date Of Star Wars Land
Let’s start in reverse order, with the debut of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Walt Disney World. Although December is considered winter (well, except maybe in Florida), it’s important to remember that fall doesn’t technically end until December 21st. This would give a specific period vague from “Late Fall 2019” around Thanksgiving to Christmas. Walt Disney World would certainly like to open a Star Wars land.
The problem with this opening between Thanksgiving and Christmas is that there aren’t many weeks that would provide a nice quiet time for a Star Wars debut with minimal headaches. It might seem tempting to have a flashy first performance at Thanksgiving or Christmas, but those periods are already becoming nightmares in the parks.
With Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge certain to worsen crowds to an unprecedented degree, opening a new land at any time more than a relatively crowded period would be undesirable, and opening during peak season could be downright disastrous. Walt Disney World is sure to train cast members and prepare crowd control for the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, but there’s actually a lot that can be done in advance.
Some aspects of breaking new ground are necessarily tested by fire. We’ve seen this at Pandora – World of Avatar, which has been chaotic for a while since opening on Memorial Day, and it’s not as crowded as it is in December. Also, the Avatar franchise doesn’t have many devoted Star Wars fans. (The crowds Pandora continues to draw should be an eye-opener for operations about Galaxy Edge expectations.)

The possible scenarios at Disneyland aren’t much better. At the resort level, Disneyland still lacks the necessary infrastructure to support Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. On normal weekends, parking is a problem, with some days filling up early. The new parking lot won’t be built until next summer, which will mean traffic snarls on the surface streets and I-5 off-ramps unless additional measures are taken to manage the crowds.
Inside Disneyland, the situation is only slightly better. To Disney’s credit, efforts have already been made to increase capacity and eliminate bottlenecks. That doesn’t change the fact that this park is over 60 years old and was not designed for today’s crowd, much less tomorrow’s. Don’t be surprised if the entire park has a one-way traffic plan used for crowd control around Main Street during evening events.
Disneyland also has heavy ticket events, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see an extended period of heavy ticket events – possibly for several weeks from late May to mid-June 2019, with a media preview in late June and a grand opening taking place . penultimate weekend or last weekend of June 2019
This gives Disneyland’s operations team a chance to see crowd trends and what’s working and what’s not in a more controlled scenario. Just as importantly (at least for Disney), it provides a paid revenue stream. And we all know Disney isn’t shy about using them today.
Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge — Build A Better Mouse Trip
It’s not yet known whether these heavily ticketed events last a week or a month (or more), but it’s unlikely that the one-night event will open the Pier a la Pixar. Star Wars is a money-printing license, and there’s no shortage of fans who will pay outrageous amounts to experience Galaxy’s Edge earlier and/or with smaller crowds. Hell, I am
Avid Star Wars fan and generally averse to the various new Disney dishes, but I’d even pay more to avoid those crowds.
It looks like the only thing that would stop Disneyland from previewing Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is if construction is behind schedule. We haven’t seen any signs of that so far, but things can always change.
Another option is timed admission tickets for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. This is not something for Disneyland; we are waiting
A Journey To Galaxy’s Edge, The Nerdiest Place On Earth
Hard ticket events followed by timed tickets after the release of Star Wars. It’s what the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Japan still uses on busy days years after that country opened, and it’s pretty effective.
In USJ, it’s a mad dash for paper admission tickets (remember, paper FastPass) after park opening, but Disney Parks in the US could easily convert the process largely to electronic if Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge becomes the new hot FastPass+ or MaxPass. We expect both coasts to use access time; otherwise, land entry lines may be used by many of the respective parks.
Ultimately, other than a mid-September or January opening (incredibly unlikely scenarios), there is no “good” time for Galaxy’s Edge to debut. Star Wars is a cultural phenomenon with an extremely avid fan base; between that and die-hard Disney fans, the opening of this new land is sure to be crowded, long lines, and chaotic no matter when it opens.
If you want to avoid the worst of it, it’s best to go to a preview (maybe) or wait at least a month after the respective openings. One month may seem like a short amount of time for a mob to die, but it’s not. The reality is that the crowd really won’t die for many years. Once you get over the hype of the opening, the difference between a month and a year after the opening will be negligible. Wait times will depend more on seasonal crowds than grand opening times.
