Is Coffee In Hotel Rooms Free – Everything you can and can’t take from your hotel room. Every hotel room has something free to offer its guests. At the very least, soap in the bathroom. Most experienced travelers know the difference between what is free and what must stay in the room. However, some guests may try to bring home things that are not meant to be free at all. Here’s a guide to understanding hotel room amenities and what you can and can’t bring home:

Hotel Rooms & Amenities

In general, coffee machines in hotel rooms can pose a health risk because they are often not cleaned properly, and due to their design, they can easily collect.

Bacteria and other harmful microbes. However, you can reduce the risk by using cleaning methods that include descaling (discussed more below).

You might have thought that with boiling water running through these coffee machines, the risk of bacteria or other unwanted elements is all but eliminated.

First, Keurig coffee makers don’t actually boil water. The maximum temperature reaches 192°F, which is well below the 212°F required for boiling (at sea level). This is due to the optimum brewing temperature for coffee (which is sometimes lower than the optimum temperature for tea).

The good news is that you don’t need boiling water to remove many harmful substances, according to Business Insider.

The bad news is that you need to maintain a high temperature for a long time to remove these harmful substances, and coffee machines may not be able to provide that.

Coffee machine tanks are a dark, moist environment that allows mold to grow. Also, sometimes they are even more hidden in a dark drawer or closet next to the hotel safe, which probably only makes things worse.

In 2011, the NSF International Study of Home Germs found that coffee makers in homes have more germs than bathroom faucet handles and toilet bowls!

These microbes included staphylococci, coliforms, yeasts and molds. In fact, yeast has been found in 50% of coffee machines’ coffee containers!

Do you think the average home coffee maker is cleaner or dirtier than a hotel coffee maker?

Consider that hotel housekeeping will not spend much (or any) time deep cleaning the coffee machines multiple times. They may not even clean the cups, which is one of the reasons why you should bring your own disposable cups or mugs when traveling.

I have no doubt that the coffee machine would be as clean as your kitchen, and I suspect that it is a breeding ground for all kinds of bacteria.

Another interesting thing about this study is that none of the volunteers ranked the coffee machine in the top 10 when asked about the places where the most germs multiply.

So when it comes to how dirty these coffee machines can be, there is a real difference between perception and reality.

Not to raise the fear meter, but you should be weary of using coffee pots in other places. If you go for your morning coffee with a light breakfast, think twice about lifting the handle of your coffee mug without cleaning it.

Coffee pot handles are known to be breeding grounds for viruses, so try to be a little careful when going out for a cup of coffee.

Rather than risking ingesting mold and bacteria, a much safer way to drink coffee or tea while staying in a hotel is to clean the kettle first.

These coffee makers can come in many different forms, so the exact cleaning method will vary depending on the type of model you use.

Descaling should remove calcium and lime deposits, which are not toxic, but can affect the operation of the machine. However, descaling can also remove mold, algae and bacteria.

To remove limescale, first mix equal parts water and white vinegar. Then run it through the machine.

Here’s What You Can And Can’t Steal From Your Hotel Room

When your cup is full, simply pour out the mixture, then start another batch and repeat the process until all the mixture is empty.

Then run the water cycle through the machine for further rinsing. You may need to run a few water cycles to get the vinegar taste out.

Some people like to wait about 30 minutes between putting the mixture on and rinsing with water, but I’m not sure if you should wait that long.

This procedure of passing vinegar and water through the coffee machine (descaling) should take place every few months for optimal cleaning.

However, as you can probably guess, there are hotels that can take much longer than a few months to start such a cycle. Some hotels and motels may not do this for years, leading to quite a large build-up of bacteria.

In addition to using a mixture of vinegar and water on the bike, you may also want to wipe down parts of the machine.

According to Chuck Gerba, a professor of microbiology at the University of Arizona, one of the dirtiest parts of a coffee maker is the part where people put the plastic capsule.

So if you have Lysol wipes, you may want to wipe down any “high contact” spots.

If you are dealing with a more complex coffee machine with multiple components, it would be a good idea to take it apart and wash each part thoroughly. This can involve a lot of work, but if you want to see how it works, check out this video.

Tip: It is worth noting that ice buckets, which are usually located near the coffee machine, can also cause problems. If you’re going to use one of these, you’ll definitely want to give it a good scrub.

Personally, I don’t like traveling with white vinegar and going through a cleaning process that may or may not eliminate the risk of it getting into anything that might be in the hotel coffee maker.

My solution is to just buy a travel kettle. You can find them in many different forms.

Many travelers like to travel with collapsible kettles. They are flattened like a pancake and fit easily in your luggage without worrying about breaking the glass or taking up a lot of space.

They are usually made of silicone and come with a stainless steel heating plate and lid. When flattened, they are only about 2 inches tall and about 5 inches in diameter.

I usually try not to buy a glass kettle because of the risk of it breaking. If you go that route, try keeping it in your carry-on so you can control how it’s handled.

Tip: If you can’t clean the coffee machine and you don’t have a kettle, you can always call reception and ask if you can borrow a kettle. It’s hit or miss, but some hotels will be happy to lend you one for the duration of your stay.

The Must Have Amenities Of A Modern Hotel Room

According to the available data, coffee machine containers can be a breeding ground for all kinds of microbes, including yeast and mold. In some cases, it may be better to boil the water in the toilet bowl. Okay, this might be complicated, but I would seriously recommend not using coffee machines in hotel rooms. Try to find a portable kettle that you can take with you and deal with it to avoid all the hassle of a coffee maker.
