How To Secure Hotel Room Door With Hanger – It’s no secret that the security of your hotel room is not high, and gaining access to your room is almost child’s play for criminals. It is also estimated that around 60-70% of hotel thefts are committed by hotel employees. There are numerous entry tools available to the public that can quickly bypass physical security controls, some of which are specifically designed to break into hotel rooms (details below). Even the in-room safes offered by hotels are not secure. From bypassing physical controls due to design flaws, master PINs that never change (and are available online), master keys, master key cards, and social engineering, accessing them is also pretty easy.
In this post, you’ll learn some common and basic methods that criminals (including employees) use to gain access to your room and/or safe, as well as quick and easy options to help you better protect yourself and your belongings. you are in or out of the room.
How To Secure Hotel Room Door With Hanger
To begin, let’s quickly review the three (3) main “security locks” most commonly found in hotel rooms, all of which are easy to bypass:

A piece of tape and a rubber band can bypass them, or a small amount of brute force can be forced through them. Security chains are almost a thing of the past and are being replaced by hotel security locks, known as square locks.
Surrounded by a plastic seal, or, more conveniently, a Do Not Disturb sign. There’s even a video of someone getting around it with a paper menu.
A “square lock” or “hotel security lock” is designed to prevent guests from opening the door as a “U” lock would. While they do a good job of preventing the door from opening, they can be bypassed with something as simple as a headphone cable.
The “Security Lock Opener” is also an inexpensive tool that will quickly unlock those mobile hand security locks from the outside.
Three Tricks For Baby Proofing Your Hotel Room
Fortunately, there are several ways to greatly reduce the chances of an unauthorized person breaking into your hotel room. The only downside to using most of these tools and techniques is that you have to be inside to enable them.
A cheaper alternative to the Traveller’s Security Lock is the Addalock. I use this lock regularly. The only drawback is that it is designed for single-bolt locks. It still holds the door closed and works very well even if your door won’t close properly unless it’s just one lock.
This lock is also easy to install and quick to remove without the need to tighten or loosen screws.
Many hotels use handles on room doors, so a tool like the “underdoor tool” is very popular. Here’s a video of Tim unlocking his hotel room using one of the tools:

For a super quick fix, roll up a hand towel and slide it behind the lever handle. This will temporarily block “under the neck” tool attacks as it closes the physical gap behind the lever handle, preventing the tool from reaching the handle. This also works whether you are in the room or not. When you do this, make sure the towel is very tight between the top of the handle and the neck. Here’s a picture from my room during DEF CON 26 where I’m using a towel.
This is one of those areas where you can be creative. In this video I show that even if you have something in the gap between the handle and the door, it should be secure. I removed the foam pad from a cheaper laptop bag, which folds up nicely and attaches easily to the handle. It moves easily at first. However, when I spread it more evenly, it wouldn’t slip or fall off.
There is also the option of gluing something large enough to cover the gap in the door. I recommend to fix it with tape, because it is not dirty and strong.
If you can secure the bolt to the bolt so it doesn’t turn, it helps prevent the door from unlocking. I would like to point out that there are many different lock configurations that automatically open the lock when you press the doorknob to leave the room. This means that if someone were to use a tool under the door against your hotel room, even with the lock off, they would still unlock it. Therefore, it is useful to attach the swivel to the bolt to increase security as well.

I found a great inexpensive option that you can quickly incorporate into your room.
This tool prevents the thumb from turning, preventing the latch from unlocking. It is very small and light, so traveling with it is not a problem. This is what I use on every trip. And installation and removal are also quick and easy. Another positive is that it can be installed without opening the door, which is required for the portable door lock mentioned earlier.
In the following video you can see that I press with my hand with much more force than can be applied with the tool under the neck and the product continues to work as expected.
Most hotels are switching to using electronic key cards. Unfortunately, there are electronic bypass attacks, as detailed in this article, where researchers have been able to create a digital “master key”, as well as other types of attacks.
Increasing Your Hotel Room Security
There are also standard access card cloning attacks, which is not as easy with NFC-based access cards, but is still possible. This article explains more.
Fresh air can be amazing, especially if you’re staying in a nice hotel with a beach view. It’s wonderful to walk into a room with a balcony and sliding glass doors. Unfortunately, people often leave this door open or forget to close it before leaving.
The fact that you are several floors up no longer deters a determined criminal, especially if it is your neighbor. You don’t always have to be a parkour genius to climb from one room to another.
After a presentation at a private event, the former detective noted that he has worked on numerous sexual assault cases in which intruders entered a hotel room by opening a sliding glass door. He recommended having something like a stick to block the door from being forced open, even if the deadbolt is bypassed. Since a dowel or similar isn’t always readily available, I looked for some more reliable road-sized options to follow his advice.

The only drawback is the size of the tool. If you plan to travel with it, you will need to keep it in your checked baggage. However, you will have the ability to provide another potential entry point to your room. Before you travel, call the hotel to find out if your room will have a sliding exterior door.
Some rooms have a set of doors that allow you to open your room to the next room if you are staying with friends or family. This is a useful feature, but it’s another potential entry point. A quick fix is to install a road lock as mentioned earlier. These doors often only have a deadbolt, so the deadbolt strip will not be effective as there is no handle for proper placement.
This helps reduce the chance of your neighbor trying to spy on you with a camera through the physical opening under the door.
The use of a mechanical key is not so popular anymore, but you will still find them in old hotels, lodges and especially in foreign countries. Because of the arms and the lock, unwanted visitors can get inside.

One option you have is to physically lock the key while you are away. This is easy to do with the Sparrows Motel Key Set.
They are based on a trick used by traffickers to deny access to their motel rooms. Often, merchants traveling with goods and cash are easy targets for theft. Criminals often had duplicate keys or simply picked the motel’s lock while the clerk was away. The motel keys were the solution to making the lock unusable and the room more secure…notice we said safer. Motel keys have two parts, the first is a bar that can be inserted into the lock, rendering it unusable. Another is a slide that can build up the pins, allowing the catch to be removed to get the lock working again. The simple and efficient Motel set consists of keys for Standard Schlage, Weiser, Kwikset and Yale
While not a perfect solution, it is a deterrent and can potentially slow down an unskilled, motivated attacker.
