Luckily, there are some DIY ways to unlock your car door when needed, and I’m not talking about tricks like using a cell phone or a baseball bat. To open your door when you don’t have your keys, try your locks, your car antenna, or even your door wipers.
How To Open The Car Door
This locking trick may seem unreliable, but it usually works well, although it all depends on the make and model of your car. Newer cars and trucks will have more problems with the automatic system and security – but not impossible. You can try at least one of these useful tips before calling a professional to do it for you.
Here’s Why You Should Always Open Your Car Door With Your Right Hand
It may seem impossible, but you can open your car door in seconds with nothing more than one of your shoelaces. Remove the lace from one of your shoes (any other type of lace will work), then tie a slipknot in the middle of it which should be tightened by pulling on the end of the lace.
Hold one end of the rope in each hand, slide it over the corner of the car door, and use one back to front to bring it down far enough so that the knot will be slide through the door. When it is in place, pull on the string to tighten and pull until it opens.
This method won’t work for cars that have a lock on the side of the door, but if you have a door knob above your door (like in the screenshot above), you have good time to do this. .
As long as you can pull off the top of your car door at least a little bit, you can use wooden wedges, wind wedges, and rods to open your car. First grab the wooden wedge and slide it to the top of the door. To avoid damaging the paint, put a cover (preferably plastic) around the rim.

If you think you can do this a lot, invest in a set of ants or an inflatable ring, and a long reach tool.
Slide the windshield on one side of the wood panel and let air into it to create more separation between the car and the door. Push into the trees as much as possible until you have a big gap. Finally, slide the rod through the gap of the door and carefully open your door by locking the mechanism on the side.
If you don’t have an air wedge, you can get by without it. It will be more difficult, but the video below makes it easier.
If you have a machine that locks on the top instead of the side, you can use the plastic strap instead, which can be easier than the strap. You will still have to pull the door open somehow, with or without a draft.

One of the best ways of opening the car door is by using a replacement clothes hanger, DIY slim jim. The point is the same. This method works well for holding a locked door; for automatic recording, see one of the other methods.
With the help of some pliers, disassemble the coat hanger so that you have one side straight and the other hooked, which you will use to pull the control arm in the door connected to the lock rod.
Next, slide the hanger down between the car window and the air stripping until the hook is about 2 inches below the window and the door of the car meet, near the door inside, where the control arm is the most. (You should check the image online first for your specific car and model, as locations may vary.)
Turn the hanger until the hook faces inward and lay on the control arm, which is not easy to find. When you close, pull and the car door will open.

Again, this coat hanger trick only works on certain systems, mostly on older cars, so this may not work on newer car models. For new cars, you can still use a coat hanger, but you need to stick it between the door and the car (as in Method #2) to open from the inside.
In older model cars with a special style exterior handle, like in the screenshot below, you can open the door from the outside using nothing but the antenna messages from your car.
Just remove the antenna, carefully hold the door handle, and move until the lock starts jiggling. When you see you are connecting, push your antenna forward and the door will open.
Most of the time you can remove your windshield wipers easily, but the method is different for each car model. No matter what type of car you own, windshield wipers can save you from having to call a mechanic to open your locked car door.

First, remove the wiper from your car’s front. If your window is slightly open, or you can open the door, you can move to the inside of the car. Use the wiper to pick up the key on the seat or press the unlock button on the side of the door (which I tried to do myself in the video below).
You can practically use anything long enough to fit through your window, but if you’re in a hurry and can’t find anything around you that can fit through the cracks, the machine windshield wipers are your best bet.

If none of these works for you, you can try the AAA service if you are a member (or call and register by phone). They usually reimburse you for some or all of the costs if you need to see an eye doctor. If you don’t have AAA, you can call the police or local security (school or mall). Police often have a small scale in their car, but don’t count on it – helping you is the most important thing on their to-do list.
