May 8 marks the 75th anniversary of V-E Day, when World War II ended in Europe. In the United States, V-E Day honors the 16 million Americans who served during the war, although only a fraction of those veterans are alive today.

According to the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), which has published a list of living veterans from 2015 to 2045, there are approximately 300,000 American World War II veterans alive in 2020. In 2015, the number of World War II service members decreased by approximately 939,000. Most living war veterans are in their 90s, although some are significantly older.

Of the 350,000 women who served in the US armed forces during the war, about 14,500 are alive today.

For this post on the number of living World War II veterans in the US in 2020, we used veteran population estimates calculated by the US Department of Veterans Affairs. Projections estimate the number of US veterans each year from September 30, 2015 to September 30, 2045.

VA projections show that between September 30, 2019 and September 30, 2020, 245 World War II veterans are expected to die each day. These estimates were calculated before the outbreak of COVID-19 and do not take into account any deaths related to the disease. The last living American veteran of the war is expected to die in 2044.

Living World War II veterans are spread across the country, with the most populous states having the largest numbers. California and Florida are home to more than 30,000 war veterans. Each of these states is home to 10% of the nation’s total WWII veteran population.

As of 2011, there are no surviving WWI veterans. Despite the fact that over 4 million soldiers were mobilized in a short period of time and over 65,000 were killed, the fact that the war was over 100 years ago makes it impossible for anyone to be alive today. The last soldier to survive was Frank Buckles, an ambulance driver on the Western Front. He was part of the US Army’s 1st Casualty Detachment of Fort Riley, which he joined in 1917. He lived in Charlestown, West Virginia and died on February 27, 2011. President Obama stayed at his funeral.

While the last American veteran died in 2011, the last surviving female veteran of any country was Britain’s Florence Gray, who served in the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force (WRAF). She died on February 4, 2012.

Because it is more accurate than the First World War, thousands of veterans of the 1940s war are still alive. According to statistics from the US Department of Veterans Affairs, 240,329 of the 16 million Americans who served in World War II are alive in 2021. At 110, Louisianan Lawrence Brooks is proud of his job and says he’d do it again.

At 110, Lawrence Brooks of New Orleans is the oldest known living World War II veteran in the United States. From 1941 to 1945, he served in the Pacific with the Army’s largest African-American 91st Engineer Battalion as an officer support worker. Photographed in his home, Lawrence Brooks holds a portrait of his younger self. Born on September 12, 1909, Brooks enlisted in the Army at age 31. Despite separate military and hostile treatment during and after the war, Brooks is a proud veteran. After the war, he worked as a forklift operator until his retirement almost 40 years ago. The National World War II Museum in New Orleans holds an annual celebration of his birthday.

When Brooks was stationed in Australia with the US Army, he was African-American at a time before the civil rights movement had anything resembling equality in his homeland.

“I was treated a lot better in Australia than my white counterparts,” says Brooks. “That surprised me.” That’s what worries me the most. why?”

Rob Cetino, senior historian at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, says the US military “racistized” African-American soldiers during the war.

“You can’t put a gun in their hands,” he says of the prevailing attitude at the time. “They could do simple little jobs. There were a lot of African-American soldiers, sailors, airmen, if you will.

The jobs open to African-American soldiers depended on the type of service and changed as the need for manpower increased during the war.

“We went to war with the worst racist in the world, Hitler, and we did it with a segregated military because, despite the guarantee of equal treatment, it was still Jim Crow America,” Cetino says. “African Americans were still subject to all kinds of restrictions and discrimination based on the color of their skin. I think they were fighting for the promise of America rather than the reality of America.”
