Built between 1851 and 1853, the Dover Hotel housed riverboat passengers before and after the Civil War. General Buckner and his staff used the hotel as their headquarters during the battle. It also served as a Union hospital after the surrender. After Buckner accepted Grant’s terms of surrender, the two generals met here to discuss the details. Lew Wallace, the first Union general to reach the hotel after the surrender, did not want his men to be alarmed by the Confederate situation, and instructed Captain Frederick Nefler, one of his officers, to tell the brigade commanders:
Move the whole line forward and capture men and property. . . [but] not a word of derision – not a word of encouragement.”
Approximately 13,000 Confederate soldiers loaded onto transports began their journey to northern POW camps. Neither the Union nor the Confederate government was prepared to deal with a large influx of prisoners. Prisoners from Fort Donelson were held in hastily rebuilt and poorly prepared facilities in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, as far away as Boston, Massachusetts,
Twice, once in mid-1862 and again in February 1863, Confederate forces attempted to drive Federal troops out of the region. Both attempts failed; but the second, led by soldiers under Generals Joseph Wheeler and Nathan Bedford Forrest, cost the city its future. This skirmish, known as the Battle of Dover, resulted in the destruction of all but four buildings in the city. One of those that survived was the Dover Hotel, which operated until the 1930s. It was reconstructed through the efforts of the Fort Donelson House Historic Association and the National Park Service. Outwardly, it looks almost the same as at the time of transfer.

Grant, asking for terms of surrender. He soon received this answer. This was not what Buckner expected. This message saved Grant from near oblivion and made him a media star.

Col. W. W. McCALL, Assistant Adjutant General, Nashville, Tennessee. SIR: It is my duty to report that the remnants of this army, having achieved brilliant success in repulsing the enemy’s attacks and successfully breaking through his lines, are compelled to surrender. I will send a detailed account of his operations as soon as possible. Now I can only say that after the battle of the 15th instant had been won, and my division of the army had taken up a position to cover the retreat of the army, the plan of battle seemed to change, and the troops were ordered back into the trenches. Before my own division returned to its works on the extreme right, the lines were attacked at that point, and my extreme right was occupied by a large force of the enemy, but I successfully repulsed their further attacks. General Floyd’s object was to force the army to retreat over the ground which had been gained in the morning, and the troops marched from
