Esplanade Hotel – The Esplanade Hotel, commonly known locally as “The Espy”, is a hotel and music venue located in St Kilda’s Inner Bay, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Built in 1878, it overlooks Port Phillip from the Upper Esplanade. It is known for its long history of live music and has been the location for the live music quiz show Rockwiz.
One of Victoria’s first, largest and most famous 19-story spas. Originally designed as three large terraces, the building was converted into a hotel during construction, becoming one of the leading hotels in suburban Melbourne. The Esplanade Hotel offered rooms overlooking Phillip Bay, at a time when St Kilda was both an affluent suburb and an ideal place for Melburnians and tourists to share the water at one of the many seaside bathing beaches.

From 1892 until his death in 1904, the Esplanade Hotel was the home of wealthy philanthropist and director of the National Museum of Victoria, Alfred Felton.

The large dining room in the rear wing (later called Gershwin House) was renovated in Art Nouveau style in 1910.
And transform it from an exclusive residence for the rich to one for the middle class. The extension to the ground floor created a larger hall and added a grand staircase and test. East Tt Ballroom was built at the rear of the venue and became an important jazz and dance venue in the early 1920s, when St Kilda’s foreshore area was one of Melbourne’s main ski areas and there were many dance parties. Auditoriums, cinemas, bathhouses, hotels, skating rinks. It was closed in 1925 and converted into a Spanish-style palace building in 1929.
Colonel Jackson took over in 1967 and ushered in a new musical era at Espy. In the 1970s, Gershwin House was transformed into a disco with a sparkling Saturday Night Fever-style dance floor and hosted live bands, as did the former pub, which became known as Nimrod House. From the 70s through the 1980s and 90s, as Espy became one of the highlights of Melbourne’s vibrant live music scene, with up to three stages of live music almost every night.
By the 1980s, the upper floors of the hotel were abandoned, and by the 1990s, the Baymore Court apartments were no longer in use. The Esplanade Hotel was classified by the National Trust of Australia in October 1990.
Royal Esplanade Hotel
The hotel was purchased by Carlton and United Breweries in 1995 and sold in 1997 to Becton Corporation, which planned to build a large condominium and retail center on the site. Becton’s proposal to build a 35-storey apartment tower behind the partially preserved hotel has been opposed by 9,000 tenants, with unions threatening to boycott if the pub is demolished. Community opposition backs Espy’s role in Melbourne’s cultural and credible music scene. A striking compromise was the lower 10-storey building at the rear and sides, replacing the main body of the hotel building with the rear wing, courtyard, Baymore Court and bottle shop respectively.
In 2001, Becton planned to sell the 200-year lease of the now-defunct Espy Hotel. The community Lewis/Comey/Esplanade Alliance’s bid was sponsored by former nightclub operators Paul Adamo and Vince Sopho (who previously owned the popular Chevron Nightclub on Church Street). After some renovations, the Gershwin House at the back reopened in 2004 with live bands and as the home of the SBS TV show Rockwiz. In 2006, the apartment development workshop designed by Fder Katsalidis was completed. Adamo and Sopho tried leasing in early 2014, without success. They discreetly closed the hotel on May 17, 2015 and said they intended to renovate, but apart from the occasional use of the Gershwin House for special entertainment, nothing has been done.
In May 2017, Espy was sold again to Melbourne hospitality group Sand Hill Road, which has operated and redeveloped Bare Sound since 2000.

In August 2022, Espy was sold to US private equity firm KKR. According to a report published in The Australian on August 3, 2022, “Before the pandemic, Celebrity Clothing Australia had been courting Vue Co, a well-known American company to sponsor it.
“The KKR-backed company just closed a $100 million deal to buy Espy owner Sand Hill Road Bar.”
In May 1995, Paul Kelly recorded his album Living at the Continental and Esplanade (1996) in the hotel’s Gershwin Room.
The SBS music quiz show RocKwiz has been filming in a house since 2005. The show’s host, Julia Zemiro, was a former hotel waitress. Renowned for its iconic location on the foreshore of Brighton Beach, the Esplanade Hotel is opposite Brighton Jetty.
