A prominent West Waterford businessman will try again to get permission to build a new hotel on Dungarvan’s seafront.
The businessman wants to build a 7-story hotel with a deli/cafe and dining room on the ground floor, as well as a terrace and lounge area by the river.
The plan also includes a bar and restaurant on the top floor of the hotel, which will be located opposite the Árus Brugha Hostel, north of Devonshire Bridge.
However, the council rejected the plans, saying the building, which would be around 26 meters high, would be “too imposing from multiple points on a large area”.

It also argued that the size, height and width of the building would be a “substantial development” of the site, while the lack of parking on the site was considered unsatisfactory.
Council planners said the proposed hotel would also disrupt Dungarvan’s tourist attractions, including the historic harbour.
Councilors on behalf of Mr Ryan said the boutique hotel at Davitt Quay would provide accommodation for additional tourism created by the Waterford Greenway in “an outstanding building of visual interest”.
They argued that the building would help develop Dungarvan into a major town with significant influence. The applicant also argued that there is currently a shortage of hotel beds in the town, which means there is a need for more tourist accommodation in Dungarvan.

Councilor Ryan estimates that seven properties in Dungarvan, including two hotels, now have a total of 206 rooms without four or five star facilities.
