Founded in 1642 by John and Anne McGreevy, Denvir was the first inn in Downpatrick. John was a soldier in the army of Charles 1 and accepted land as payment for his services. The building is steeped in history and some examples of this are as follows.

It is said in local lore that Denver has the privilege that, at the speed at the front of an English street, a debtor cannot be caught so long as he chooses to stay. It is believed that this resulted from the transfer of the right of sanctuary from the cathedral when it was in ruins. However, those who fail today may not be wise to count on the protection of this tradition!
Mrs. Delaney, diarist, friend of Dr. Johnston and other eighteenth-century literary notables, was a frequent visitor to Denver’s. They married the Dean of Down, and they and their guests were fortified with a huge breakfast and even bigger meals before and after the service. Her diaries provide insight into life at the time.
The association with the name Denvir dates back to the end of the 18th century, and it is likely that a local family of Norman origin was Danvir originally. A member of this family, in the middle of the nineteenth century, after serving in the US Army, led a survey of the arms of the Rocky Mountains and named the city of Denver, Colorado, after him.
The Inn is mentioned in publications dealing with a famous election in County Down in 1805, when Castlereagh was defeated by a coalition of local gentry supporting Sir Arthur Mead, candidate for Earl of Downshire. At the time, tenants by vote were required to do so publicly under the eyes of the landlord and there was a lot of corruption. For this role in the operation, Mr. Meade’s headquarters, the inn has been described by a disgruntled opponent as “Denvir’s Hot Hell”.
