I think it’s a combination of things. It is treating our patients with respect, dignity and compassion, combined with a spiritual emphasis, that makes us unique.
It has given me a better understanding of addiction and has helped me to be more compassionate towards addicts.
My favorite step is step five, because I have seen, without exception, freedom and hope come when people are honest and admit their mistakes.
I’m not sure of the official reason, but I think it works when people take it seriously and use it as part of their recovery.

I can’t pinpoint one person in particular, but there’s usually something in every patient’s story that touches me, especially when I see them hopelessly down when they come in, and then I See the change that happens when they realize they are not alone and don’t despair, and then leave with confidence and hope. Then they come back in a year and get their cup… and then, still in the light of hope and faith, they come back in successive years and get another cup. It brought me tears of hope and confidence!
I can’t speak for other pastors, but my smart answer would be “caution.” Then I realized that this probably explains how I approach each patient…with care and compassion (and prayer). And then it’s about meeting them where they are and working through the first 7 or 8 steps and applying everything to them and their situation.
I think it is because one cannot do it by oneself. We need help on the road to recovery, and that includes other people and God (as we know it).

“I can’t describe to you the people, the staff, the experiences. The things I left behind. The people I’m still in touch with to this day. Willie Hope changed every aspect of my life after I left my home. Blinded by addiction. I would recommend this place to everyone I know, and have been back many times to check it out. – Brittany, Willie Hope Alumnus
“I recommend Willie’s Hope to anyone trying to stop drinking alcohol and using drugs. Everyone is welcome here. I’ve been sober for four years now.
