Can You Smoke In Hotel Rooms – Staying in a non-smoking room at a hotel that allows smoking elsewhere does not prevent exposure to secondhand smoke, a new study reports.
Writing in Tobacco Control, researchers examined a sample of 10 hotels with complete smoking bans and 30 hotels with designated smoking rooms. They analyzed the air and surfaces for tobacco smoke pollutants, took finger swab samples to measure the presence of tobacco carcinogens, and tested the urine of non-smokers after staying in the bedrooms

Some of the non-smoking rooms had significantly less pollution. But at worst, the levels of air pollution from tobacco in smoking rooms were almost five times higher than in non-smoking hotel rooms, and surface pollution was 25 times higher. In some cases, non-smokers who stayed in non-smoking rooms were found to have twice the exposure to nicotine in their urine than non-smokers who stayed in non-smoking hotels.

Vermont prohibits smoking in public areas of hotels, but not in private rooms. Indiana, Michigan, North Dakota and Wisconsin prohibit smoking in hotels.
According to the study’s lead author, George E. Matt, a professor of psychology at San Diego State University, designated smokers don’t work.
“Smokers leave a legacy they can’t control,” he said. “Physical deposits—in clothes, blankets, upholstery, drywall—are very deep, and you can’t just remove them.
A previous version of this article incorrectly identified states that prohibit smoking in all hotels. They are Indiana, Michigan, North Dakota and Wisconsin – but not Vermont, which allows smoking in private hotel rooms.

To the list of endangered travel amenities — which includes pay phones, collective plane screens and concierges — is one more to add: smoking rooms. Even a few years ago, guests were regularly asked if they preferred a smoking room. But very few hotels today offer smoking rooms and those are scarce.
According to the latest report from the American Hotel and Lodging Association, a trade group, the share of non-smoking hotel rooms has increased in the last decade from 74 percent to 97 percent. And the proportion of hotels offering only non-smoking rooms rose from 38 percent in 2008 to 85 percent last year.
For the business traveler with a tobacco habit, then, there are many options. Those looking for glamor will struggle, as 97% of luxury hotels have non-smoking rooms. Only in the category of budget hotels – the lowest price segment of the five listed in the survey – the majority of establishments have rooms for smokers. Smaller hotels tend to have more smoking rooms than larger hotels. And older hotels are a slightly better bet than newer ones.
Non-smokers can avoid these good, old basics. Even if they land in a non-smoking room in a hotel with smoking options, they are still subject to secondhand smoke. A 2013 study found that tobacco air pollution levels in non-smoking rooms were five times higher than in non-smoking hotels. And levels of surface pollutants, such as cigarette ash, were 25 times higher.
Do Not Smoke
Smokers can, of course, stay in non-smoking rooms and use different strategies to improve. The most obvious of which is braving the elements for a puff outside. But many choose more fun methods. Internet forums are full of advice for those who want to smoke in non-smoking rooms (and avoid the often heavy fines for the hotel to decontaminate the room). The least unpleasant of these is the upgrade to a room with a balcony. Great options include smoking outside the window, exhaling in the bathroom fans, turning on a hot shower to absorb the steam and putting a wet towel under the door.
But travelers who smoke should be aware of how the wind blows. In the United States, none of Marriott International’s hotels allow smoking, nor do Wyndham Hotel Group’s lifestyle and full-service brands. Hilton’s two new brands, Canopy and True, do not allow smoking in any of their hotels around the world. Outside of the US, there are generally more smoking options, although Europe is also becoming increasingly smoke-free. Smokers who don’t want to mess around with wet towels and steam baths should prepare for a future in which smoking in a hotel room is no longer an option.

A new online booking tool has been introduced to help smokers find hotel rooms where it’s safe to light up.
Lake Forest, Calif.-based Smoketels.com has a database of more than 250,000 smoking-friendly hotel rooms, said founder and smoker Sean Bradley. “On existing online travel booking sites like Orbitz, Travelocity and Expedia, you have to click on a hotel and then see if there are smoking rooms,” he said. “It’s very confusing and frustrating. Our list only includes hotels that have smoking rooms available.
A growing number of hotels, such as Marriott and Starwood, have made all their US properties 100 percent smoke-free. “But many Days Inns and Quality Inns properties — and many hotels in the South, where there’s also a lot of smoking — generally have smoking rooms available,” Bradley said.
In a 2012 survey of 52,000 properties by the American Hotel and Lodging Association, 63 percent reported being 100 percent smoke-free. “But keep in mind,” Bradley said, “many hotel chains that prohibit smoking in their U.S. properties have smoking rooms available in their properties in other countries.”

About 43.8 million adult smokers in the United States who travel will smoke even if they rent a smoking room. “They’ll burn candles, use cologne, blow smoke out the windows, all in an attempt to mask the smoke,” Bradley said.
Smoketels.com may face a tough time against online travel agencies, said Marcelo Gasdia, consumer analyst at PhoCusWright.
“The only way to generate revenue is to steal market share,” Gasdia said. “It’s a hard thing to do when you’re up against strong players like Priceline, Expedia or Kayak. Going for a niche audience is an approach, but it’s still difficult to take customers away from these household brands. Of course, you can, as long as you don’t expose non-smokers to second-hand smoke, and learn from us how to avoid it with smart techniques.
But before you get too worried, check first and see if the hotel has designated smoking rooms. Some hotels still have a room or two reserved for smokers.

But since most hotels, restaurants and other public places are non-smoking areas, this article is here to save the day and help you enjoy tobacco or your favorite weed in peace.
Many of us like to have a drink or two on vacation, and for smokers, a drink is usually accompanied by a cigarette, a vape session or some weed to smooth things out. It’s a social and relaxing habit, and that’s why we’ve compiled a list of smart ways to quit smoking without leaving a trace.
A great way to avoid any problems is to equip yourself with a vape pen. This modern alternative to combustion smoke is generally odorless and discreet. Easy to travel with, and vape pens are a great way to hide in the “smoke”, not only in hotel rooms, but in other smoke-free environments where lighting is prohibited.
E-cigarettes have grown exponentially in the last decade, making wax and oil pens even harder to detect. If you are going to take a flight to your hotel, or plan to be in public or in a meeting, this feature makes it a great candidate for travel, leaving some savings.

For those unfamiliar with vape pens, they are very discreet. Just like a real pen, they can easily fit in your pocket or makeup bag.
A simple but clever trick is to blow any condensation towards the air conditioning vents, and the air conditioning unit will dissolve any condensation through the dehumidification function.
While vape pens are usually your best option, chances are they won’t always be available, or you’ll run out of e-liquid or concentrate (not good).
For when you have to go back to traditional smoking, here are some techniques that many people use with great success.
