Think you won’t lose valuables if you check your bag? think again More than 34,000 claims for lost or damaged items were filed at the 15 busiest US airports between 2010 and 2017, and about 40 percent of them were denied. And this is not the only mistake that can be made when checking a bag. Check out the tips below to help you avoid common pitfalls and make sure your luggage—and you—arrives intact.
Can You Leave Luggage At Hotel After Check Out
I’ll start with the obvious, because it seems many travelers haven’t learned this important lesson yet. (Items stolen from checked bags in recent years have included $5,000 worth of watches, gold rings, iPads and cameras, according to CNN — all things that shouldn’t have been checked in the first place.)

As a general rule, you should not pack anything in your checked bag that you cannot part with permanently or that has a high monetary value. If you must check your bag at the gate, be sure to remove important items such as laptops, tablets, smartphones, prescription medications, and — perhaps most importantly — your passport.
Any expensive souvenirs you buy during your trip should be protected in your carry-on or, if they are too large, well packed and sent home. Be sure to get insurance as well as a tracking number on the package so you are protected in case of damage or breakage.
It’s no surprise that fireworks and other flammable items are prohibited in checked (and all) baggage, but did you know that you can’t pack certain types of batteries? Slipping a few AAs into your checked luggage is fine, but loose lithium batteries—like those used in cameras—must be packed in your carry-on, and liquid/cast batteries (the kind found in cars) unless they’re part of of an electric wheelchair.
Also common: hit-anywhere matches, e-cigarettes (they can go in your carry-on) and, on many airlines, hoverboards. Double check the TSA restricted items list before checking a bag.

If your luggage has to go through a physical inspection, a non-TSA approved lock will tear open your bag for security reasons—it’s that simple. Buy a TSA-approved one (meaning security officers can open it with a master key). The lock should be advertised on the label.
Although airport security does its best, there is no guarantee that all of your luggage will be waiting for you at baggage claim. Save yourself the hassle of having your items stolen from an unlocked bag by getting a TSA-approved lock for your luggage.
Make sure all of your bag’s compartments and pockets are zipped and closed securely, and don’t let anything hang out of it, such as shoes attached to handles or backpack straps dangling in all directions. These items can easily get caught on airport conveyor belts and either get damaged or lost.
The shorter your stay, the less your bag will travel with you to your final destination. Of course, most of the time the bag

Build it, but the stress of wondering if it will come can be alleviated by taking more time. I recommend at least two hours or more for international transfers where you need to pick up and then recheck your bag before your next flight.
Be careful with packaging methods for shampoos, lotions, and other liquids. “I once had to check my carry-on, with my 3.4-ounce plastic bag of liquids and gels in the front pocket, where I could easily access the security line,” says Editor-in-Chief Sarah Schlichter. “I didn’t think about it when I handed the bag in at the gate, but when I got it back I realized that my shampoo bottle had been broken, probably when a baggage handler threw the suitcase into the trolley. Alas! I should have kept my liquids in the main compartment of the bag.’
To avoid further toiletry mishaps, try taping your liquid bottles and putting them in a well-stuffed plastic bag. (You don’t even have to pack them all—check what toiletries your hotel will have available.) If you’re carrying alcohol, wrap the bottles in layers of cloth or bubble wrap.
It’s not uncommon for people to accidentally grab the wrong suitcase at baggage claim. Minimize this by tying colorful ribbons to your luggage or using unique luggage tags – something that makes your suitcase stand out from the vast array of black and navy bags. Better than this? Use an outer bag with bright colors or patterns.
Things You Should Never Put In Your Checked Bag (2022)
On most airlines, checked bags can weigh up to 50kg — and if you go over the limit, the fees add up quickly. If you tend to be a heavy packer, buy a small luggage scale to make sure you’re within the limits. Note that you should not drop your bag down to 49.9kg and call it a day. Airport baggage scales aren’t always accurate, so you’ll want to leave some room for error. (Bonus: This gives you room to bring home some souvenirs.)

Checking bags at the gate is usually free when the plane runs out of storage, but you only do so if you have a bag to check. A backpack or small bag can easily fit under your seat with legroom, eliminating the need to wait for another bag at baggage claim.
You’ve heard it’s a good idea to pack an extra pair of underwear or an entire outfit in your carry-on in case you lose your suitcase, but here’s another reason to pack clothes in your carry-on: You might catch a cold. Airports are often cold, and if your companion needs to blow air vents in the winter, you’ll be glad to throw on a hoodie and some warm socks to keep you cozy on the plane.

Most major hotels allow early check-out. While some smaller establishments offer luggage storage at the hotel prior to check-in, it’s always a good idea to ask about luggage storage when you book.
Larger hotels may allow you to leave your luggage at the hotel after check-out. However, some hotels charge for luggage storage after check-out. It might be better to book an extra night.

Travelers often ask, “Will the hotel store my luggage even if I’m not there?” The answer is usually “yes”. Hoteliers often agree to hold your luggage for a tip. Note that this setting is informal. While hotel staff may be able to find a somewhat secure place to store your bags, busy professionals won’t be able to keep an eye on them all the time.
