In an age where rules are relaxed and then restricted, and COVID-19 cases are on the rise after they’ve dwindled, you probably don’t want to book trips too far in advance. And there’s one more reason you don’t want to book in advance: it’s usually cheaper to book a hotel late in the day.
Reviewed more than 2,500 hotel room rates in 2019, 2020 and the first half of 2021. Hotels are distributed around the world, vary by class and market, and room rates are compared for nights within 15 days versus 4 months.

And 66% of the time it’s cheaper to book a hotel after 15 days than after 4 months.
The difference is even bigger so far in 2021, when you’re finally even more likely to place a trade. The same rooms we analyzed for 2021 are 73% cheaper if they are booked 15 days in advance than after 4 months.
While it’s almost always cheaper to book last minute, how much cheaper is it actually? Turns out, even if it’s a little cheaper, don’t expect a bargain here. Rooms are 13% less on average if they are booked last minute than they were four months ago.
You may want to book a weekend stay at a Las Vegas hotel at the last minute, but you probably don’t spontaneously switch to Spain.
Innovative Ways Hotels Can Use Instagram To Get Travelers Into Bed
Oh, don’t expect much difference in the booking strategy of international hotel and domestic hotel. We did not see a significant difference in hotels when grouping them by property in North America (save 12.7%) compared to all other countries outside North America (save 13.5%).
There’s one area where you’re likely to see bigger discounts on last-minute bookings: fancy hotels. We grouped the hotels in our analysis into three tiers – high, medium and low – identified by their average or market price. So the Hampton Inn will generally be low-end, the Hilton Garden Inn will be mid-range, and the Conrad will be a high-end hotel.
And as it turns out, low-end hotels have a minimal spread based on when you book – just 5.5% across all hotels we analyzed in 2019, 2020 and the first half. year 2021.
But when it comes to high-end hotels, you’re more likely to get a substantial deal if you book last minute. Our top-tiered hotels are on average nearly 22% cheaper when booked 15 days in advance.

If you usually book budget hotels, don’t expect to save a lot of money on last minute bookings. But if you like luxury, chances are you can get a deal if you’re willing to bet on short-term bookings.
While it is possible to save money, in most cases we do not recommend making a last-minute booking for a few important reasons.
The average savings on booking for 15 days compared to 4 months ago is 13%. Sure, that’s $260 saved on a $2,000 hotel budget (for a single trip or for an entire year), but keep in mind that 13% is average and some of the savings will be much smaller. (and rooms can be more expensive if you book minutes in advance).
Also, don’t forget about the headaches you may face because of procrastination. The hotel you want may already be sold out. Or it may have rooms available, but only larger suites with views, will still be more expensive.

Most Hilton properties allow you to change or cancel up to 24 hours before your arrival date. While Hilton is generous in its cancellation policy, it’s not uncommon to see free cancellations made 48 or 72 hours in advance.
Other brands offer flexible cancellation policies, but only if you have the status. For example, if you have World of Hyatt elite status, you can cancel your reservation up to 24 hours in advance at most properties.
At those hotels – and others with similarly flexible cancellation policies – it’s a good idea to book as soon as possible. Then periodically check the ratio. If they drop below what you paid for, you can always cancel and rebook.
