Can People Live In Hotels – When 27-year-old Tetsuya Ino started running the Asahi Ryokan, a hotel owned by his grandmother in Fukuoka, Japan, he wondered how he could grow his business in the new economy.

Inoue had an idea: What if he could use the Internet to bring in a new audience and a new revenue stream?

Now, guests at Asahi Ryokan have the option of paying just ¥100 (about $1) per night for an overnight stay if they agree to stay for their entire stay.

However, there are limitations to how live streaming works. Inoue explains to Travel that the feed is video only, so guests will have privacy in their conversations or phone calls. His YouTube channel is called One Dollar Hotel.

“It’s a very old ryokan, and I was looking for a new business model,” says Inoue, who started running the hotel last year. “Our hotel is on the cheap side, so we needed a special value-add that everyone would talk about.”

Since Ino started offering contracts last month, four guests have offered him so far.

“Young people today don’t care much about privacy,” adds Inoue. “Some say it’s good [to see] a day.”

Things You Should Never Do When Trying To Get A Hotel Upgrade

And while the $1 room is the clear loss leader, Innoio thinks beyond the price of a night’s stay. The YouTube channel already has more than 1000 subscribers. After accumulating more than 4000 watch hours, he will be able to place ads on the channel and earn money.

On days when the room is empty or no one is broadcasting, Ino Ryokan will broadcast live from the office. Signs in Japanese and English were placed in front of the camera to let the audience know he was out of the room.

So, other than the chance to have thousands of strangers watching your REM cycle on the Internet, what’s the motivation for going to Fukuoka?

The beautiful seaside town is known for its incredible cuisine. In addition to local, fresh-caught seafood, Fukuoka is also home to the popular Ichiran chain, home to the delicious pork Tonkosu ramen. Also, the Fukuoka Art Museum reopened in early 2019 after a three-year renovation.

Hotel living is only for the rich and luxurious and on the other hand for poor eccentrics. Howard Hughes and Marilyn Monroe were passengers on the one hand and on the other hand going to the worst parts of the city. But as travel has become more affordable and accessible, a new group has emerged: the contractor with a flexible work schedule or who wants to live simply and see the world.

This article is not for anyone who wants to live full-time in a Beverly Hills hotel. It’s also not for a family of four or those who have to show up at the office 9-5 every week. Instead, it’s for someone (or a couple) who wants to see as much of the world as possible and live in as many different places as possible within a reasonable budget. In short: the growing number of travel contractors who live in the city where they work instead of commuting to an expensive apartment is rarely appreciated. Living and traveling in hotels is cheaper than living in San Francisco, New York, or many other desirable but extraordinarily expensive cities (see cost estimates below).

Do this even if you don’t want to live in a hotel. If you haven’t used it in a year, there’s a 99 percent chance you don’t need it. These items take your money and/or mental energy to maintain. Go to eBay, look at the value of the item in recently completed auctions and decide if you want to sell or donate the item. Try going on a 3-7 day trip with only the following: 1 jacket, 4 shirts, 4 pairs of underwear, 1 pair of shoes, 1 pair of pants and a bathing suit. You’ll find that it’s not only possible, but it makes traveling more fun. You spend less time thinking about moving your stuff and more time having memorable experiences. Everything, including your mobile office, fits into a large laptop backpack. Or if you’re traveling heavy, you need to be able to carry everything from room to room in a quality bag.

It can be good to have a home base to store things. It could be a storage closet, your parents’ house, or even a small apartment that you AirBnB when you’re not there. Getting a free home by renting it out as a vacation rental is for another article.

There are two ways to stay at a hotel: negotiate a long-term rate with the hotel or make a last-minute reservation. If you stay longer than a week, you may want to negotiate.

I usually stay in a place for less than a week and prefer last minute. Unless a large convention event in your city fills up all available hotel rooms, you save money by booking last minute. This is a rare case where delay pays off.

Apps like HotelTonight and Hotels.com offer better prices than websites. For example, you can often find rates in the Hotels.com app that are 10 to 25 percent lower than on Hotels.com. Discounts range from 10 to 80 percent off the published price.

5. Paperless Payment and Mail Forwarding – Go paperless even if you don’t live outside the hotel. There’s usually still some mail that isn’t paperless (IRS, tickets – you know, the fun stuff). For that, the USPS has a premium shipping service for $18 a week that sends your weekly mail anywhere.

6. Use the hotel gym – One of the few downsides to frequent travel is that it’s easy to give up.

Go for yourself and not just for the superficial “I feel fat” feeling. We all feel better when we get our heart rate up for 30 minutes every day (or every time). Few hotel gyms are great and probably worse than the class, gym, jogging or cycling route you’re used to. But hitting the hotel gym, even if it’s just 15-20 minutes each day, seems like a manageable laziness cure when traveling for extended periods of time. Better yet, try to convince a few friends to do a regular morning workout. This option requires a lot of planning and a special cat pet, but it is a very fun option.

7. Use the front desk – The front desk doesn’t just store extra adapters, toothbrushes and other items. supplies, they can point you to the best places to see and eat nearby, which can often be found on Yelp or in your Maps app. For bar and nightlife recommendations, ask the hotel bartender (hopefully your age) for the name of their favorite place.

As an alternative to a car, I use Uber and rental car agencies. Rental cars are usually much cheaper than you might think ($10-$20 per day), unless they are rented at the airport. I also use an electric scooter for many short trips. It’s not for most people, but if you’re interested, consider a compact electric scooter.

Short answer: Hotel living is only as expensive as what you make it. Depending on your level of living and how you reduce your expenses, it can be less or more expensive than renting an apartment.

At first, hotel living may seem expensive. For example, you spend an average of $150 a night on hotels (which gets you a nice room in 2022 if you use deal apps like Hotel Tonight). That would be $4,500 a month, which is too expensive for most people. But once you start living in hotels, you travel more and spend more nights visiting friends, camping, staying with a significant other at their house, and earning free nights as a reward. On average, I stay in hotels for half that time, so now I get $2,250 a month.
