I stayed at Element Kuala Lumpur this week which opened last year and while I’m a big fan of the property I’m not sure what to think about not providing bottled water.
The property has a 3M Water Filtration System installed in all units but includes one faucet in the kitchen which means if you need to boil water in the bathroom you have to get your own cup from the kitchen diner.
Element Hotels have a friendly vibe and I really like their lodge style accommodation which is top notch but this may be a step too far.
When I stayed at Alila Ubud Bali last year they also have an eco-friendly solution which is that they run their own processing system and bottling plant on site. The hotel fills glass bottles that are distributed in guest rooms.

At least this way you can have a nice shower if you want to use it to brush your teeth or wash your mouth/face where tap water is not always recommended, especially in South East Asia.
All well and good when it comes to environmental protection but hotels should focus on the practical side of things first and foremost. I’m not someone who uses bottled water everywhere I go and I’ll actually drink tap water without any problem in Germany or Japan. I wouldn’t do this in many other countries that use a lot of chlorine or where the water is very polluted and South East Asia is known for water that causes health problems. Also for brushing purposes it tastes amazing so, it is better to get bottled or filtered water in the bathroom as well.
In Ano I use filtered water for a cup of tea. I wouldn’t say it tasted bad but maybe I got depressed and ended up going to buy a bottle of water on the ground floor of 7/11. Do you support ending the supply of bottled water in hotels?
