I recently spoke to a front desk clerk about how her hotel chain allocates rooms at check-in. Intrigued, I asked how his staff determined who had the best-located rooms. He revealed this amazing fact. Those who book through the hotel’s website or are members of the hotel’s loyalty program are usually given a first-time room assignment with better views and a quieter location. Travelers who book through online travel agencies (OTAs) like Priceline often get “home run” rooms (which it calls “ice machine rooms,” or basically what’s left over). The agent couldn’t tell me how many hotel chains do this, but said it’s “fairly common practice” and that it sweetens the deal for travelers who book regular rates.

Correction: Joining hotel loyalty programs is often free, and membership can guarantee better room accommodation, free nights, or useful amenities like free breakfast or Wi-Fi.
If having the best possible room is the key to a happy trip, book directly through the hotel’s website. But when those low, low OTA prices are unbeatable (we know that feeling), you can always request a specific room type or location.
King size bed or two doubles? High or low tax? No smoking? Water scenes. Three single red M&Ms? When booking a hotel, most booking systems allow you to ask questions or add comments about your stay. However, most hotels in the underage font also state that your requests are not guaranteed.
Correction: The old adage “expect nothing and you’ll never be disappointed” holds true here, but it’s a cold comfort when you really want some comfort. First, know that hotels usually try to accommodate your requests. If upon check-in you notice that your double beds have turned into singles or you have been placed in a smoking room, please speak to the front desk staff member and politely request a change. It’s also a good idea to call the hotel prior to arrival to confirm your requests, especially if they are for medical reasons.

I am guilty of being charged with this sin of travel. While traveling abroad a few years ago, I noticed my flight was leaving on May 14th, so I booked a destination hotel from the night of May 14th. Rookie mistake. I completely neglected to check that my flight was red by landing in the early morning of the 15th. This means I paid for an expensive (and non-refundable) room that I didn’t need.
Correction: Also consider time zones. If you cross the international transit change line, yes, the check-in dates may not be what you expected. It’s also a good idea to have someone look at your booking before clicking “Confirm” or “Pay” to make sure the dates you choose are correct.
Credit cards rule when booking a hotel. Credit cards not only offer rewards such as airline miles, free nights, or cash back, but they also provide certain guarantees that debit cards and cash do not (such as fraud protection or instant refunds for misuse).
Another tip many travelers don’t know? Most hotels will require an unexpected deposit if you use a debit card to protect against overdraft charges if there are not enough funds in the account. These additional deposits can be added. I once made a deposit of $100 in Las Vegas that was not returned to my account for two weeks.

Travelers, be careful. a misleading hotel name or location description may lead you to book an airport hotel when you think you’re getting a central location. You’d be surprised how often travelers see the name of a hotel and quickly book it without checking to see if it’s in the right place. After all, some hotels may call themselves “close to the city center”, but a quick search may reveal that they are located in the airport… two hours away.
Correction: Please check the postal address and find the exact location of the hotel on Google Maps. Always enter the hotel address and see how far it is from popular attractions and restaurants by foot, car or public transport. Try entering the addresses of some of the attractions you want to see at your destination and plot your route. You can also explore the area using Google Maps Street View. And if there are multiple hotels from the same chain in this city, make sure you book the hotel yourself in the right area; Hyatt Times Square and Hyatt Flushing are really very different.
Back in March, editor Ed Perkins reported one of the most outrageous resort fees we’ve ever seen. A decent $170 room rate at a Colorado hotel was artificially inflated with a $35 cleaning fee, $40 resort fee, $10 pool and spa fee, and a $5.10 handling fee. oh!

Correction: You may struggle with some fees, such as cleaning or newspaper delivery, if you don’t want to use such services. Others, such as resort fees, are mandatory, so additional costs must be factored in when booking this hotel. Hotels are expected to clearly display resort fees, but OTAs may not do so and instead use vague wording such as “additional charges may apply”. So call the resort and ask about additional resort fees before booking.
If you’ve ever used Oyster’s Photo Fakeout feature, you know that hotels go to great lengths to ensure that their facilities look perfect. But upon arrival, that infinity pool really can be the size of a postage stamp, and those luxurious bedding can feel like sandpaper. Take everything the hotel says about itself with a grain of salt.
Correction: Do your research. Reading user reviews is a difficult balancing act. You want to read as many reviews as possible without overloading with information. You also want reviews to be unbiased and up to date. The best way to get an accurate picture of your resort is to choose your review sites wisely. TripAdvisor and Oyster (which, like us, are owned by TripAdvisor) offer fairly accurate previews of what your hotel is offering; Oyster room photos are a great source of information if you’re wondering how your room fits in with the glossy and possibly photoshopped photos of the hotel. Be suspicious of reviewers who are overly effusive in their praise, and vice versa; If you see that Bob Grump has awarded one star to every hotel he has ever checked into, feel free to question Bob Grump’s rating.
As most procrastinators will readily admit, waiting until the last minute to plan your trip can have dire consequences for your credit card balance. Hotel prices can go up in the days leading up to a certain date, and you may be left without a room if something goes wrong (or if there’s nothing left in your budget). On the other hand, being an advanced planner can have its downsides. Sure, you might want to have all your travel ducks in a row as soon as possible, but it can actually cost you money if you book your hotel room too early.

Correction: There are no easy answers to when exactly is the best time to book a hotel room. Prices depend on many factors: location, seasonality, crowds at conventions and even the weather. Generally, booking more than 21 days prior to arrival is not permitted for most popular destinations. you will put yourself at risk due to high prices. It’s best to start checking prices at least 40 days in advance and monitor the trend. If prices seem to be going up, make a reservation.
If you want to make sure you get the lowest rate, the hotel booking site Tingo (sister company of SmarterTravel) automatically monitors your hotel and, if prices drop, will rebook at the new, lower price. Of course, if you’ve waited until 11am and the hotel selection seems small, check out the Hotel Tonight app for some really last minute deals.
