“My dad still kneels at night and prays,” said Brooks’ daughter, Vanessa. He credits his father’s diet, training and faith for his long life. And in some ways, prayer made this holiday possible.
“I heard he was an old vet,” Lee Crean said. “And I said, we have to do something at the World War II museum.”
Crean, a museum docent, met Brooks years ago at the church and helped start the now-annual museum party in 2014. It’s a tradition that employees hope won’t end anytime soon.
From 1941 to 1945, Brooks served overseas with the predominantly African-American 91st Engineer Battalion in places such as Australia and New Guinea. He was a reluctant soldier, preferring to work as a cook in his unit.

“When I first went, I got drafted, the old sergeant told us, ‘You’re training to kill people,'” Brooks said. “I said, “Killing people?” How much I love people, you say I have to kill them?
After returning home to New Orleans, Brooks faced the challenges of the Jim Crow South, working as a forklift operator, eventually retiring at the age of 70. That was four decades ago.
But Brooks weathered the storm. Throughout her life, Brooks had five children, two of whom she survived, 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

The National II. Lawrence Brooks, the oldest living American World War II veteran, died early Wednesday morning, according to the World War Museum. He was 112 years old.
“He was a beloved friend, a man of great faith, and his gentle spirit inspired those around him,” said Stephen Watson, the museum’s president and CEO. “He proudly served our country during World War II and returned home to serve his community and church. His kindness, smile and sense of humor connected him to generations of people who loved and admired him.”

However, the centenarian superstar had a sunny disposition for most of his life and was a beloved figure in his community and around the world.
On his last birthday celebration, on September 12, the car parade due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the National II. It featured a serenade by the World War Museum’s choral trio and a military flyover from the shotgun house in New Orleans.
Born in 1909, Brooks was one of 15 children and grew up in rural Louisiana and Mississippi. A few weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor, at the age of 31, he was drafted into the US Army, when the army was still racially segregated.
During the war, Brooks served with the largely African-American 91st Engineer Battalion stationed in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines.

Most of the time, Brooks was a driver, a waiter and three officers, two lieutenants and a captain, according to the Army Times. He also helped build bridges, roads and airstrips. He eventually achieved the rank of Private 1st Class.
During his service in Australia, Brooks enjoyed a level of freedom he had never experienced before, either in the military or at home. The National II. In interviews with the World War Museum, he wondered whether the country would accept black soldiers, which was in stark contrast to the racist Jim Crow laws of the South at the time.
“I was treated much better in Australia than my own white people. I wondered about that,” he recalled.

“On one of the supplies flights between Australia and New Guinea, an engine on Brooks’ plane failed while flying over the ocean,” the museum reports.
