What Stores Are Closed For Thanksgiving 2022?
Last year, stores, major retailers and fast food chains closed their doors on Thanksgiving due to the COVID-19 pandemic. And for the second year in a row, most major retailers and restaurants will close their stores on Thursday.
Target announced Monday that its stores will no longer be open on Thanksgiving — a move that began last year as a one-off due to the pandemic, but is now a permanent change.
“What started as a temporary measure driven by the pandemic is now our new standard — one that recognizes our ability to satisfy our guests’ holiday wishes within store hours and beyond,” Target CEO Brian Cornell explained in a memo to employees, according to
Earlier this year, Walmart announced that its stores would be closed for Thanksgiving as a “thank you” to all of its associates for their hard work during the pandemic, said Daconna Smith, Walmart’s U.S. vice president and chief operating officer.

Other major retail chains, such as Best Buy, JCPenney and Kohl’s, have also announced they will be closed this Thanksgiving — instead pushing customers to start their Black Friday shopping online this year.

While most major retailers will be closed Thursday, stores like CVS, Whole Foods, HEB and Dollar Tree will be open with hours for customers.

Retailers and other businesses, depending on the state, may have special rules and precautions due to COVID-19.
And if you’re not in the mood to cook this Thanksgiving, be warned — you might be picking thin, as some big restaurants and fast food places are closed for business.
An earlier version of this story listed HEB among the stores closed on Thanksgiving, but HEB stores are open until noon. We’ve all been there before: when you realize you’re elbow deep in making your grandma’s turkey stuffing recipe. I forgot to buy thyme at the grocery store yesterday. But rest assured that while your favorite store won’t be open on November 24th, there are still a bunch of stores open on Thanksgiving. Whether you need extra ingredients to perfect your Thanksgiving menu or you’re desperate for craft supplies so the kids can make your own Thanksgiving cards while the pies are in the oven, you’ll find a store open on Turkey Day.
While many restaurants and chain stores are closed on Thanksgiving to give their employees the day off to spend with their loved ones, there are also places open, so you have the option of buying a pre-cooked turkey dinner or grabbing a quick item. I didn’t know you needed me until the last minute. Supermarkets like Publix and supermarkets like Costco close their doors on Thanksgiving, but Whole Foods, Wegmans and CVS will be open at different hours so you can do some last-minute shopping. However, it’s always a good idea to check in with your nearest location, as holidays like Thanksgiving, New Year’s, and Christmas Eve may have different schedules based on the location of the branch. Bottom line: You should be able to find what you need somewhere around Thanksgiving. And don’t forget to thank the employees working on the holiday!

Thanksgiving officially kicks off the holiday shopping season, with nearly 2 million more people estimated to shop via Cyber Monday Thursday than last year, according to research from the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics.

Two-thirds of those surveyed in early November said they planned to shop this year’s Thanksgiving weekend, the Retail Federation said. That amounts to about 158.3 million people, up from 156.6 million last year but down from 165.3 million in 2019.

A report from the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics says a record number of shoppers are expected to hit stores this week — with about 166.3 million people planning to do their Thanksgiving shopping through Cyber Monday.
