In 1902, local industrialist Joseph Stickney built The Mount Washington Hotel, a white Renaissance hotel with a distinctive red roof and a large colonnaded porch. An instant success among the privileged class, it was the most luxurious hotel of its time. More than 250 skilled craftsmen, masonry and cement specialists, were brought from Italy during the two years of construction. This, Rosebrook Lodge, is the new 16,000 square foot dining and mountain event space at the Omni Mount Washington Resort. It opened in early fall, but temporarily, with limited participation due to pandemic restrictions.
Still, Rosebrook Lodge hosted at least a few weddings over Columbus Day weekend, a very popular time for leaf peepers and pre-ski season travelers in this remote region of northeastern New Hampshire.

The three-level Rosebrook Lodge is a beautiful mid-century modernist building with vaulted ceilings and walls of stained-glass windows, directly overlooking the Presidential Mountains and the Northeast’s highest peak, Mount Washington.
Inside, the Switchback Grille on the ground floor is a more formal waiting restaurant. Upstairs, Crystal Mountains is set up as a casual self-service restaurant. There is also Peaks, a take-out cafe.
Both restaurants have fireplaces and outdoor decks, and feature a nature-influenced design with soft green accents for furniture and decor. While the name of the grill is obvious, Crystal Hills comes from the initial listing of the White Mountains by the settlers – the mountains glistening in the distance, as if covered in crystal.
Last winter, the new Bretton Woods Skyway gondola, New Hampshire’s first eight-passenger gondola, opened to take skiers and ‘Rosebrook Mountain.’

As Rosebrook Lodge rose in the valley this past spring and summer, changes were afoot at the historic Mount Washington Hotel.
With the hotel closed due to the pandemic, the already planned renovation of the magnificent main hall continued without a hitch. From its original floor covered with sticky mastic, artisans climbed to higher floors, carefully redoing the beautiful moldings around the ceiling.
Largely due to changing attitudes towards food and the rise of consumption culture in America, the most significant change to the octagon-shaped main dining room, as it is functionally called, is a large, modern, white marble worktop. – the square foot bar, which sits right in the middle. It has rotating shelves, so the drink bottles can be hidden during the breakfast service. Secret but not forgotten: It is not forbidden to open the eyes.
The new banquettes are set up around the bar and while the much-loved dining tables are spread across the windows on one side of the central bar area, the other side has cozy seating areas with sofas and a newly installed fireplace. It has more of a lounge atmosphere.
Abandoned Grand Hotel Resort Since 2011
The main dining room has a solid scheme of earthy browns and soft greens, combined with rich shiplap wood. The walls, gently sloping with a view that could very well be the mountains, valleys, and valleys beyond the White Mountain National Forest, consist of panels similar to ancient custom walls.
The new installation meant that there was now no room for the grand piano and its players, or the small dance floor, which added a worldly nostalgic touch to the dinner.
The piano is moved into the charming Dining Room, an elegant adjoining hall separated by original French doors.
This is the hotel’s fine dining restaurant, but will also be used for parties and weddings. Compared to the sitting and dining areas of the Main Dining Room, this is a more elegant space, decorated in silver gray and royal purple. Along with the new, there is also the old: the original antique dining chairs are now upholstered. They’re called New England economy, but they look just as good, if not better—these seats weren’t created for single-generation use.
